Star Wars: The Clone Wars was a major turning point for the franchise. It pioneered the idea of expanding the Star Wars universe through television series, which was a relatively new concept for established movie franchises at the time, and something that’s now essential to Star Wars. The show also introduced or greatly developed some of the most beloved characters in the entire saga.
Characters like Ahsoka Tano weren’t first introduced in the main live-action show; she actually appeared in the Star Wars: The Clone Wars movie. Despite this, the Clone Wars series really shaped her character and became crucial to her role in the overall Star Wars story. Similarly, the show significantly deepened our understanding of Anakin Skywalker and his transformation into Darth Vader. This deeper character work is likely why The Clone Wars included a subtle and often-missed Easter egg relating to Darth Vader.
Anakin’s Clone Wars Armor Was A Subtle Nod To Vader

Some Star Wars viewers have noticed that Anakin’s armor during The Clone Wars foreshadows his Darth Vader suit. This is a clever way of showing that, even at the start of The Clone Wars, Anakin was already beginning his descent to the dark side. While the show portrays Anakin as likeable and humorous, it’s important to remember he previously committed a terrible act – the massacre of the Tusken Raiders in Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones.
It would have been simple for The Clone Wars to overly foreshadow Anakin’s turn to the dark side, as that was a key goal of the show. One criticism of Revenge of the Sith was that Anakin’s fall felt rushed, and The Clone Wars offered a chance to address this. While there are occasional, direct hints – like Vader’s breathing – the show usually built the foreshadowing more subtly, as seen in this instance.
The Clone Wars Significantly Improved Anakin’s Story (And The Prequels)

Considering how much The Clone Wars boosted the entire Star Wars saga, especially the prequel movies, it’s amazing what the show achieved. One of its biggest contributions was developing Anakin Skywalker’s character, and really exploring the reasons behind his turn to the dark side. Storylines like his rivalry with Rush Clovis revealed his flaws years before the events of the prequel films, adding depth beyond what we saw in those movies.
Ahsoka’s story – both her arrival and her leaving the Jedi – really helped explain why Anakin lost his trust in the Jedi Order. Many subsequent Star Wars series, including Star Wars: The Bad Batch, Star Wars Rebels, Ahsoka, and Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord, all started with ideas and foundations laid in The Clone Wars.
