Batman’s beginnings are one of the most famous stories ever told. As a child, he witnessed the tragic murder of his parents, and that event drove him to become a nighttime vigilante. This simple yet powerful origin story explains both Bruce Wayne’s relentless fight against crime and his deep compassion for others. Remarkably, it has remained largely unchanged since its debut in 1939 in Detective Comics #33. Even when Batman is updated for new films or TV shows, or after a complete series restart, his core origin stays consistent. That’s why DC’s latest take on the story is so surprising.
The ‘Absolute Universe’ comic series aimed to strip characters down to their core and rebuild the world around them, starting with altered origin stories. For example, Superman still witnessed Krypton’s destruction, but Wonder Woman grew up in Hell, and Batman only saw his father die – his mother lived a full life, and his father was murdered during a school trip. However, DC recently revealed that even this new Batman origin was a fabrication. In Absolute Batman #20, it was revealed that the Joker was actually the architect of Batman’s life, having created and manipulated him from the very beginning.
Batman Uncovers the Soul-Killing Joke

Right before his death, Gordon entrusted Bruce with files he claimed would be deeply disturbing. These files, revealed in issue #20, contained a psychological profile of young Bruce Wayne created by Scarecrow. It showed Bruce was vulnerable to the Joker’s scheme to manipulate him into becoming Batman. The villains had actually used Joe Chill to push Bruce toward a life of vengeance and heroism. Completely shaken, Batman sought answers from the one person who might know the truth: Joe Chill. He forcibly entered Blackgate Penitentiary and confronted Chill in his cell, demanding the truth.
Chill remained silent, but the Scarecrow quickly explained everything. He revealed that Bruce Wayne was deliberately pushed towards becoming Batman as payback for his mother’s involvement with the Court of Owls. The Joker didn’t want Batman as an ally or to help him take over Gotham; he simply wanted to create a darkly ironic situation. Knowing Martha Wayne was associated with the Court of Owls (owls eat bats), the Joker found it amusing to have her son grow up to become Batman. Everything Batman has experienced – his hardships and triumphs – has all been for the Joker’s amusement.
The Ultimate Reinvention

The Joker has completely outmaneuvered Batman, setting up his entire life before Batman even knew what was happening. Batman always believed he chose to become a symbol to expose difficult truths, not be the focus of attention. But he now understands that wasn’t his decision either. The Joker orchestrated Bruce Wayne’s path to becoming Batman from the beginning. Every villain and obstacle Batman has faced has simply been the Joker manipulating him, like a favorite toy. This completely flips their usual relationship. Instead of Batman unintentionally creating the Joker, this Joker deliberately created Batman as a target for his twisted games.
The regular Joker thrives on chaos, but Absolute Joker imposes a harsh, controlled order. In this world, the Joker is like an evil version of Bruce Wayne, and Batman is his counterpart – the chaotic force trying to dismantle the order the Joker has established by saving people. Everything about Batman, from his appearance to his goals, was manufactured by the Joker. However, that doesn’t diminish his accomplishments. Batman has defeated Bane and rescued Waylon, and even inspired Alfred and Harley Quinn to team up and protect Gotham. This proves that Batman’s origins don’t matter; his actions speak for themselves.
The real danger of lying isn’t the lie itself, but that people might actually believe it – and Batman believes he can save Gotham. He keeps fighting because that’s what defines him as Batman, not his enemy, the Joker. While the Joker started him on this journey, Batman will ultimately be the one to finish it. The Joker may not realize it, but Batman will overcome the Joker’s manipulation, and he’ll do it with the support of his friends.
