EastEnders‘ executive producer, Ben Wadey, has announced that viewers can expect some groundbreaking storylines in the near future, hinting that the show will be exploring new and unexpected directions.
Wadey became Executive Producer earlier this year, taking over from Chris Clenshaw, and has already overseen some memorable storylines, like the returns of Zoe Slater (played by Michelle Ryan) and Max Branning (played by Jake Wood).
We’re excited to have Zoe and Max returning to the show, and we have a lot of fantastic teams participating right now.
As a total soap fan, I’m genuinely excited about the direction the show is taking. They’re really focusing on stories that feel real and emotional, and they’re even venturing into some new and unexpected areas – things we haven’t really seen in soaps before. Trust me, you’re going to want to keep watching because some incredibly compelling storylines are coming up!

Steve McFadden, the actor who plays Phil Mitchell, recently won an award for his performance in a serial drama for the very first time. He shared his thoughts on rising talent, saying it’s great to see new and previously overlooked actors getting opportunities, and he believes Ben is helping to create those opportunities now.
What I really appreciate is that he’s taking risks on new faces, but also giving established actors a real opportunity to shine in leading roles they haven’t had before. It’s cool to see him championing both up-and-comers and those who deserve a bigger spotlight.
Wadey isn’t revealing any plans for bringing back other characters right now. He says they’re happy to have Zoe and Max back and want to focus on their return for now, but he hasn’t ruled out the possibility of more characters returning in the future.
The show has been incredibly successful this year, particularly with the storyline focusing on Phil Mitchell’s struggles with his mental health. Actor Steve McFadden has expressed how proud he was to portray this challenging arc.
This story clearly resonates with many people, especially those who often feel unheard or ignored. It was a real honor for me to be part of such a meaningful storyline.
I’m really pleased with how well it was received, as it clearly resonated with people and made a big impact, which is fantastic.
