EastEnders confirms explosive return of Mitchell icon this Christmas – but why have they returned?

Kim Medcalf is returning to EastEnders, and she’ll be back on television very soon.

I’m so excited to hear that Kim Medcalf is coming back as Sam Mitchell! She first played her back in 2002, and it’s going to be great to see her on screen again, even if it’s just for the Christmas period. I remember when she left last January – it was a dramatic exit! She basically demanded money from Phil, her brother, from their Aunt Sal’s will. It was a bit of a shock at the time!

When she didn’t get what she wanted, she exposed his relationship with Emma Harding (Patsy Kensit), then took money from his safe and fled to Canada.

Now she’s set for a huge return – and will come face to face with Zoe Slater (Michelle Ryan).

Chrissie Watts and Zoe have a long history together, and they were both present the night Chrissie killed her husband, Den. Chrissie falsely accused Zoe of the murder, but Sam had actually been the one to hit Den, and he witnessed the entire event.

I can’t believe Sam took the fall for everything, while Zoe walked away without a scratch! It’s going to be incredibly awkward – and probably painful – when they finally see each other again, I just know old feelings and hurts will resurface.

EastEnders has hinted that it’s unclear whether the returning character wants to reconcile with someone from their past, or if they’re back for revenge. Only time will reveal their true intentions.

Could she be the mystery assailant who has targeted Zoe in recent weeks?

Adding to the complications, Phil is also dealing with a lot. He’s changed significantly since last connecting with everyone, having previously attempted suicide and now helping to care for his close friend, Nigel Bates (Paul Bradley), who has early-onset dementia.

And we can’t forget Vicki Fowler (Alice Haig), who still holds Zoe responsible for her father’s death. She’ll likely express these feelings to Sam as well!

Honestly, I was thrilled to hear that Medcalf is returning to EastEnders! She said it’s a real joy for her, and especially at Christmas – you just know there’s going to be drama and excitement. As a long-time fan, I’m already anticipating some classic Walford fireworks!

I really enjoy playing Sam. She’s a bit of a troublemaker and always stirs things up, but she also has a sensitive side, which makes the role interesting.

EastEnders’ Executive Producer, Ben Wadey, announced he’s thrilled to have Kim Medcalf return to the show for a brief appearance later in the year.

Wherever Sam Mitchell goes, trouble seems to find her. Now that her former partner-in-crime, Zoe Slater, has returned, it remains to be seen if they can reconcile or if their conflict will continue.
