Viewers were recently surprised to learn Pam St Clement will return to EastEnders as Pat Evans, and now there’s more exciting news: another beloved character from Albert Square is coming back to Walford!
Shaun Williamson, best known as Barry Evans, is coming back to the soap this December for a special episode. Similar to how Pat Butcher returned, his appearance will center around the storyline of Nigel (played by Paul Bradley) and his dementia.
As Nigel’s dementia worsens, he’ll begin to see visions of his late friend Barry. These visions will appear alongside Barry’s stepmother, Pat, in the pub. Despite a difficult relationship during their lives, Barry and Pat will set aside their differences to support Nigel when he needs it most.
I was so surprised when I got the call to come back to EastEnders – it was a total shock, but in the best way! Honestly, I was really nervous walking back onto the Queen Vic set – like, seriously nervous! – but it was amazing to be back working with everyone again. It was such a brilliant episode to be a part of, and it just proves you never know what’s going to happen next!

Adam Woodyatt, who played Barry Evans on EastEnders from 1994 to 2004, hasn’t appeared on the show since leaving. Barry was a memorable character famous for his constant misfortune, unlucky-in-love status, and long-running rivalry with Pat Butcher. His dramatic exit came when his wife, Janine, pushed him off a cliff, following a seemingly minor mistake: he hadn’t worn slip-on shoes.
Ben Wadey, the show’s executive producer, expressed his excitement about Shaun Williamson returning to EastEnders for a special episode featuring his character, Nigel. He noted that Barry Evans, known for his misfortune – especially his questionable footwear – it was a pleasure to have him share scenes with Pat in The Vic.
The one-off episode, already completed, will broadcast in December. EastEnders has been collaborating with Dementia UK on Nigel’s story from the very beginning.
Nigel recently caused a crash when he took his old Morris Minor for a joyride. He accidentally hit Jasmine Fisher and Gina Knight during the incident.
Nigel recently went to court, but prosecutors determined he wasn’t mentally fit to face charges. This decision deeply upset him, as he’s worried about his declining mental state and believes he should have been held accountable for something.
