Following the death of his son Anthony, EastEnders‘ Patrick Trueman (Rudolph Walker) will unexpectedly start depending on artificial intelligence in an upcoming storyline.
The family doctor died around Christmas, launching a new mystery storyline centered on Zoe Slater (Michelle Ryan). Because she was one of the last people to see him, she was falsely accused of the murder and sent to jail.
It’s now been revealed that Jasmine Fisher (played by Indeyarna Donaldson-Holness) committed the crime, and she’ll be taken into custody in next week’s episodes.
After Anthony’s funeral, Patrick will start using a special program designed to help him deal with his grief. Over the next few weeks, he’ll begin to depend on a simulated version of his son, which will worry his family and friends.
Forget ChatGPT, this is Chat GP Trueman.

This isn’t the first instance of a TV drama bringing a deceased character ‘back to life’ with AI. Earlier in 2024, the show Coronation Street featured a storyline where Leanne Battersby (played by Jane Danson) interacted with an AI version of her late son, Oliver, after joining a cult.
This EastEnders storyline is part of a larger BBC event called AI Unpacked Week, running from March 2nd to 8th.

Kate Phillips, BBC’s head of content, explained that “AI Unpacked Week” is a continuation of the BBC’s efforts to help people in the UK understand artificial intelligence and its impact. The BBC is offering a variety of programs on TV, radio, and online to both inform and engage audiences about this rapidly developing technology.
Whether it’s exploring difficult topics like grief on EastEnders, investigating the latest developments in robotics with a Panorama special, or offering educational resources for teens on BBC Bitesize, the BBC covers a wide range of subjects.
As a total film and media geek, I was really struck by what she said. Basically, with all the huge changes happening in technology right now, the BBC sees itself as a key place people can turn to for reliable information, interesting perspectives, and a way to actually connect with these new developments. It’s about being a trusted guide through all the chaos, and that feels really important.

Beyond the usual storylines on EastEnders, BBC One will air a Panorama report questioning the future of work in the age of automation, asking ‘Will Robots Take My Job?’. The latest series of the thriller ‘The Capture’ will also delve into the increasingly relevant topic of deepfakes and how they’re being used.
BBC Radio will feature special programs about AI, with presenters discussing how it’s being used. Even CBeebies is contributing, helping parents understand how to use AI safely and responsibly with their children at home.
