Enthusiasts of the soap opera, EastEnders, were ecstatic when Steve McFadden won the honor titled “Serial Drama Performance” at the National Television Awards 2025, an event that occurred on 10th September.
The exceptional acting in the storyline of Phil Mitchell’s mental health struggle is what ultimately led him to win the award. He has been playing this role on the soap opera for some time now, but it was particularly during the 40th anniversary celebrations earlier this year that his performance reached its peak, notably in a flashback episode where Phil confronted the demons from his past directly.
McFadden candidly shared, “I simply receive the script and strive to perform it to the best of my abilities, regardless of the narrative I’m provided. However, this specific tale resonates deeply with many. It represents those who often go unheard, the voiceless, and to be entrusted with such a significant storyline was truly an honor for me.
I’m overjoyed that it turned out so successfully! It seems to have resonated deeply with others and made a profound impact, which fills me with immense satisfaction.
He also made it clear that he plans to continue depicting Phil’s struggle with mental health, focusing on the lasting impacts he experiences from his fight.
In conversation about his remarkable 35-year stint on the soap opera, McFadden couldn’t help but express gratitude towards the talented writers who have consistently provided him with compelling storylines throughout the years.
He noted, “Over a span of more than three decades, I’ve portrayed numerous diverse characters within this particular genre. It keeps things interesting for me as I’ve been able to embody multiple personas – the variability ensures there’s never a dull moment because my character constantly evolves and with each new tale that comes my way, I strive to deliver the best performance possible.
These individuals – the writers, producers, and directors – consistently challenge and stretch our abilities to their maximum. I admire this approach, even though it can be demanding at times, as it ultimately brings out our finest work. I am thankful for this experience.
EastEnders also scooped the prize for Continuing Drama, crowning them the best soap this year.
