Effi o Blaenau – TRAILER

Wales has a rich history of producing acclaimed actors like Richard Burton and Anthony Hopkins, so we’re excited to share films made there. The trailer for “Effi o Blaenau” (pronounced Effy O Bly-n-yiy) looks particularly promising.

The movie centers on Effi, a young woman determined to leave her struggling hometown, where opportunities are scarce and even her grandmother works long hours to make ends meet. A night out in Llandudno leads to a brief connection with Lee, a wounded soldier, offering a glimpse of a brighter future. However, reality quickly sets in, and Effi finds herself facing a difficult path as a single mother with no job. Her story highlights a serious social problem: a system lacking essential resources for new mothers and forcing difficult decisions based on what’s possible, not what’s best.

Directed by Marc Evans, this film tells the story of Effi, a young woman who experiences the difficult consequences of societal problems. Newcomer Leisa Gwenllian delivers a powerful performance in the lead role. The film is based on Gary Owen’s acclaimed play, Iphigenia in Splott – a well-known modern drama that has been performed widely in Wales, England, and around the world – and represents Marc Evans’ vision of the story adapted for the big screen.

Notably, the film stars Tom Rhys Harries (known for his roles in Netflix’s White Lines and Apple TV’s Suspicion) just before he takes on a leading role in DC Studios’ upcoming Clayface. The trailer suggests this new film will likely launch his career to international stardom.

Effi o Blaenau opens in cinemas on 19th June 2026
