Everyone’s been buzzing about how the Elden Ring movie, directed by Alex Garland and produced by A24, will actually play out, especially when it comes to when in the game’s story it’s set. But those recent set photos a fan snagged seem to finally confirm something we’ve all been arguing about since the movie was first announced way back in 2025!
Fans have guessed the upcoming film might be set before the Shattering, a major event in the world of Elden Ring, as that would be a fascinating time period to explore. However, recently leaked footage shows a broken statue of Marika, mirroring its appearance in the game after the Shattering has already happened. This suggests the film – or at least some of it – will take place after the Shattering.
In Elden Ring, “The Shattering” is the name given to the devastating war that happened after the Elden Ring – the thing that kept order in the Lands Between – was destroyed. When Queen Marika broke the Elden Ring, her powerful children fought each other over the pieces, called Great Runes. This endless fighting left the world in ruins and without a ruler. The game begins with you, a Tarnished warrior, returning to try and fix everything.
Elden Ring Fans Are Torn On Film’s Timeline
It was expected that the new story would take place after the events of The Shattering, but some players are a little let down. They’d hoped to explore the history before The Shattering. For example, one fan, Cutest_Kitten_Citre, expressed wanting to see characters like Rykard before his transformation, and to witness Melania, Radahn, and Ranni at the height of their power.
Many fans are hoping for a backstory explaining why Marika shattered the Elden Ring, or why Godwyn’s death caused her to do so. However, recent leaks showing a heavily damaged film set suggest a traditional prequel isn’t likely.
