Bandai Namco revealed that the expansion for Elden Ring, titled Shadow of the Erdtree, has hit a sales milestone of 10 million units. Not long after, it was announced that the base game, Elden Ring, surpassed 30 million copies sold. The success continues with Elden Ring Nightreign, the multiplayer spinoff released on May 30th, which has already sold five million copies, making sales in the Lands Between relentless.
Approximately one out of every three Elden Ring players are choosing to purchase the exceptional expansion, a figure that strongly indicates Bandai Namco may have a true blockbuster on their hands. This success is partly due to the outstanding quality of the original game, and the expansion, Erdtree, has further solidified this, despite its challenging nature.
Regarding Nightreign, indeed it’s challenging, perhaps more so for me due to my aging reflexes struggling to cope. However, many players appear to effortlessly conquer the Nightlords. The post-release updates have primarily introduced Darkened variants of the bosses, which are essentially supercharged monstrosities with a lethal third phase. Some of the terrors that received an upgrade to their deathly dance include Fulghor, one of the hardest bosses in the game already. It seems FromSoftware has a keen understanding of what the players crave.
Despite initial impressions about Nightreign, it’s essential to understand that Director Junya Ishizaki has clarified from the beginning that it’s not typically categorized as a live service game. Consequently, players should not anticipate an abundance of post-release content and updates. However, there might be more to it: an error on the game’s Steam page hinted at potential DLC in the future, and considering Erdtree’s popularity, one would assume it’s a logical assumption.
The series hasn’t given any indication yet about its future beyond this point, but with sales like these, it’s safe to say that it will continue. The Shadow of the Erdtree extension by FromSoftware continued their tradition of exceptional expansions, addressing player criticisms in a humorous manner by amplifying them significantly. However, it served as a conclusive ending. A sequel is imminent, but specifics? Alas, you don’t possess that knowledge.
