Originally, Zach Cregger was widely recognized for his comedic roles, notably on the TV show The Whitest Kids U’ Know. However, these days he’s focusing more on intense productions as a filmmaker. This is evident in his movies like Barbarian and Weapons, with the latter set to hit theaters in July 2025. Not forgetting his involvement in the Resident Evil reboot. A buzz has arisen suggesting that Cregger might be planning a unique DC film, an idea I’m quite intrigued by if it’s indeed true.
In 2022, Zach Cregger disclosed that he penned a film set in the DC Universe and characterized it as a “Batman-related project,” which is unusual for him given his lack of interest in superhero films generally. Later on, Daniel Richtman (via ComicBookMovie) reported that Cregger has written a movie involving Joker and Harley Quinn. Richtman also mentioned he’s unsure if Cregger has presented his idea to DC Studios co-head James Gunn yet, but plans to do so in the future.

Without requiring explicit details about the plot at this moment, I’m open to discovering the tale Zach Cregger has created for the merry criminal known as the Joker and his lively accomplice. Granted, it’s somewhat ironic for me to express such sentiments given my feelings that The Joker has been overused in films and television lately. To be clear, I didn’t care much for the Joaquin Phoenix-led Joker movies, and it’s anticipated that we’ll witness more of Barry Keoghan’s portrayal of the Joker in Matt Reeves’ Batman series.
With a fresh perspective, even a figure like the Joker could be reimagined, and I believe Zach Cregger has the ability to bring that to life. However, it’s crucial that his work aligns with the DC Universe’s ongoing narrative, rather than the “The Batman” series. I’m eager for a portrayal of the Joker and Harley Quinn that stays true to their comic book roots, as exemplified by “Joker: Folie à Deux,” while also maintaining a more realistic approach.

If James Gunn agrees with Zach Cregger on the project, it would mark the second DC Universe movie centered around a Batman villain in production. The film, titled “Clayface,” is scheduled for release in 2026 and will feature Tom Rhys Harries as the shape-shifting antagonist. This upcoming movie has been characterized as an adult-oriented “Hollywood horror story.” Given that Zach Cregger penned the script, it’s likely that the horror genre will continue to be a significant element of this R-rated production.
Moving forward, let’s not forget about the DCU’s Batman film, titled “The Brave and the Bold“, which was unveiled as part of their initial Gods and Monsters lineup back in early 2023. However, it doesn’t have a set release date yet, so it’s possible that a Joker and Harley Quinn movie might come before “The Brave and the Bold“. On the other hand, “Weapons” is scheduled to hit theaters on August 8th.
