While her character Nancy Thompson spends most of the Nightmare on Elm Street films running from Freddy Krueger, actress Heather Langenkamp has a close relationship with the actor who plays him, Robert Englund. She recently honored Englund with a heartfelt speech at his Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony, praising one of his strongest performances in the Nightmare on Elm Street series.
Robert Englund began his career on stage and in smaller film roles, but he became famous for playing the villain in A Nightmare on Elm Street. This role cemented his status as one of the most memorable movie villains of the 1980s. Because his co-star, Heather Langenkamp, also rose to prominence playing the iconic “final girl” Nancy Thompson, it was fitting that she was the one to honor him at his Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony. Here’s how she began her touching speech, sharing her perspective on what Englund’s star truly represents.
I was lucky enough to work with Robert Englund on three movies, and I was actually on set the day the character Freddy Krueger came to life. Seeing this star with his name on it makes me immediately think of Freddy’s iconic glove – those five metal fingers he wore, a creation of Wes Craven’s imagination.
That glove is iconic! After seeing it, I’ll always associate that golden star with Freddy Krueger’s terrifying metal fingers. The glove is as famous as the actor who wore it – I wouldn’t want to be on the receiving end of those claws! It’s also great that Freddy himself suggested a fedora instead of a newsboy cap – a clever idea from a horror legend.
Robert Englund truly embraced the role of Freddy Krueger, often rehearsing his frightening performance even before filming began, according to Heather Langenkamp. Despite playing a villain everyone loved to despise, Langenkamp, known from The Midnight Club, considered Englund a hero for his impact on horror and his perfect depiction of evil.
From the moment Robert Englund started performing Freddy Krueger’s voice, it was chillingly perfect. He blended a disturbing sneer with an incredible performance, creating one of the most iconic villains ever imagined. Every day, he brought something new to Wes Craven, helping to shape the character we all know and love. Robert Englund has truly left his mark on Hollywood, and Wes Craven revolutionized the horror genre, supported by Bob Shaye’s belief in his vision. Even a century from now, people won’t wonder who Robert Englund was. His impact on our industry, the horror genre, popular culture, and even the world, is permanent and will be remembered forever.
That was a truly wonderful speech! It’s funny to think that the actor who played such a convincing villain received a hero’s welcome that day. Langenkamp was spot on when she said Freddy Krueger was the epitome of evil.
For me, what really set the Nightmare on Elm Street movies apart wasn’t just the scary deaths – it was how Freddy Krueger got to his victims. He invaded their dreams, the one place you can’t escape! Robert Englund absolutely nailed the role, bringing a playful but deeply disturbing energy to Freddy that made those films truly unforgettable and, in my opinion, some of the greatest horror movies ever made.
Heather Langenkamp, known as a ‘Scream Queen,’ charmed everyone with a heartfelt tribute to Robert Englund, recognizing his significant contributions. Englund was visibly moved by her speech, playfully calling them “beauty and the beast.” Even though they’ve both moved on from the ‘Nightmare on Elm Street’ films, they clearly still share a close bond, as Englund joked they’ve been “attached at the hip since 1984.”
