No, no, there’s no question about how much Emily Blunt’s family loves The Devil Wears Prada.
Everyone was thrilled when Oscar nominee Emily Blunt announced she’d be reprising her role in The Devil Wears Prada 2, set to release in theaters on May 1st. Her husband, John Krasinski, and their daughters, Hazel, 12, and Violet, 9, were especially excited about her return to the world of Runway.
Emily recently told Will Marfuggi from TopMob News that her kids watched The Devil Wears Prada for the first time about a year ago, inspired by their friends who were already fans.
Her girls had even given it a recent rewatch, as they would be watching the sequel very soon.
The 43-year-old added, “They just love it.”
And her daughters weren’t alone, as Emily’s husband John also loved the sequel.
You know, I was chatting with someone about the new film, and they were so excited! Apparently, her partner is a huge fan of the original, so everyone was really happy to see this one come out. It’s always great when a sequel lives up to expectations, especially for dedicated fans!
John has long been fascinated with the 2006 movie, and his partner has often talked about it over the years since they got married in 2010.
Emily told TopMob in 2016 that she was really moved and flattered by John’s dedication to the movie. She mentioned he had an incredible attention to detail, even knowing exactly what Anne Hathaway wore in every scene.
I remember when it first came on while we were dating. He was watching a scene with all her incredible outfits, and he suddenly said, ‘That’s my favorite outfit!’ I was so surprised and just thought, ‘Seriously?’

Even so, it wasn’t immediate – the former Office star waited a while before telling Emily how much he loved the film.
John recalled a conversation with Emily in 2016, telling TopMob, “I was watching something and said it was great, and she asked if I’d seen a particular movie.” He continued, “I told her I’d seen it many times. She playfully pressed me, asking exactly how many. Thankfully, we’d been dating for about a year at that point and had a good level of trust, so I admitted I’d watched it around 75 times.”
But he hadn’t been so forthcoming when they first began dating in 2008.

Oh my god, it was early days with her, she just dropped by my place, and I was, like, totally lost in a movie. I remember she walked in and I panicked and changed the channel! She gave me this look, like ‘Were you seriously watching that?’ And honestly? It was better she thought it was something scandalous than finding out I’d seen The Devil Wears Prada a million times. Seriously, I’ve seen it so many times, it’s embarrassing. But she’d have never understood!

Even before the book The Devil Wears Prada was published, a movie adaptation was already being planned. Fox executives were impressed by the first 100 pages and a summary, which were enough to secure the rights to the story inspired by author Lauren Weisberger’s time as assistant to Vogue‘s editor-in-chief, Anna Wintour. Carla Hacken, a former Fox executive, explained to Variety in 2016 that she was the first at the studio to read it and immediately recognized the character of Miranda Priestly as a compelling villain, prompting a quick deal to acquire the rights.
Even before the book became a New York Times bestseller in 2003, efforts were underway to adapt it for the screen. However, after four different writers tried to create a straightforward adaptation, Aline Brosh McKenna was brought in to write a new version. Her focus shifted to exploring the compromises women make as they climb the ranks at fashion magazines. “I wrote a first draft fairly quickly—in about a month,” McKenna explained. “Then I revised it based on feedback from everyone involved.”

Creating the story behind Anna Wintour presented challenges during filming. According to author McKenna, people in the fashion industry were hesitant to speak with her, fearing retribution from Wintour and Vogue. She shared with Entertainment Weekly that one anonymous source told her the characters were too kind, noting that the real fashion world doesn’t operate that way. As a result, McKenna revised the script to portray the characters as more driven and less forgiving.
Director David Frankel told Entertainment Weekly that Anna Wintour’s influence created challenges finding filming locations. Because of the Met Ball, the Metropolitan Museum wouldn’t allow them to film there, and Bryant Park – a frequent Fashion Week venue – was also unavailable.
We couldn’t even get permission to film in the famous apartment buildings we considered for Miranda’s place—the building committees wouldn’t allow it. Finally, a producer friend, Wendy Finerman, lent us a five-story townhouse on the Upper East Side to use instead.

Bethenny Frankel shared that the production designer, Jess Gonchor, secretly visited Anna Wintour’s office at Vogue to study it. He recreated it so accurately in the film that, reportedly, Anna Wintour immediately redecorated her real office after the movie’s release, according to Frankel’s interview with EW.

The costumes for the movie also proved difficult. At first, according to Frankel in EW, no well-known designers would offer clothing, fearing the disapproval of Anna Wintour.
The film’s incredible wardrobe was created by renowned costume designer Patricia Field, who gathered around 150 items from designers like Donna Karan, Zac Posen, Rick Owens, and even Prada. She made sure to create a distinct look for Meryl Streep’s character, Miranda Priestly, while still subtly differentiating her from Anna Wintour. As Streep joked, “Everything was borrowed, so we had to be careful not to spill anything at lunch! They wouldn’t accept returns with spaghetti stains.”

I’ve always been fascinated by Anna Wintour, and it’s funny to me that she even has a little bit of a playful side! I read about Meryl Streep’s interview with her for Vogue’s 125th anniversary issue – Meryl had played Katherine Graham, a friend of Anna’s, in the movie The Post. Apparently, the interviewer asked Meryl who was the hardest character she’d ever portrayed. Meryl started to answer, but Anna quickly cut her off with a laugh, saying, ‘No, no! We’re not going there, Meryl!’ It was such a classic Anna moment, and it just showed she doesn’t take herself too seriously.
Anna Wintour actually did see the movie—the same screening as her former assistant, Andrew Weisberger. She later explained to 60 Minutes that while she found it entertaining, it wasn’t an accurate portrayal of life at the magazine.

Meryl Streep was the only actress the studio considered for the role of Miranda. Studio VP Hacken told Variety they were completely focused on her, saying she just hoped Streep would accept the part. When Streep’s agent called to say she’d read the script and was willing to meet with the director, Hacken was overjoyed – she even briefly put the agent on hold so she could celebrate privately in her office.
As a longtime fan, I’ve always admired what Meryl Streep brought to her roles, and this one is no different. She told EW she really connected with the character’s strength and refusal to dim her light for anyone. What struck me was how unapologetically herself she was – Streep said the character didn’t shy away from any of her flaws, and didn’t try to be charming or manipulative to get what she wanted. My friend Carrie Fisher used to call that kind of behavior ‘the squeezy and tilty’ – that tendency to overly accommodate – and this character just didn’t do any of that. It was so refreshing to see!

Before agreeing to the role, Meryl Streep did something very reminiscent of the character she would play – Miranda Priestly. Although she had already won two Oscars and received eleven other nominations, Streep wasn’t used to negotiating a higher salary. However, this time, she confidently asked for more money.
She told Variety that the initial offer felt a little low – not necessarily insulting, but not quite what she deserved given her contributions to the project. After she was prepared to leave, they increased the offer significantly. She was 55 years old and had finally learned to confidently negotiate for herself.
Streep also requested specific scenes to avoid portraying Miranda as a simple stereotype. She wanted to show Miranda’s expertise in fashion – particularly the famous scene about the blue sweater – and also a more vulnerable side, shown in the private hotel room scene where she lets her guard down.
Oh my god, the white hair! It was ALL Meryl’s idea! She just showed up to meet with the studio head looking like Miranda, completely transformed. Director Frankel told EW that Meryl became Miranda in that meeting – she didn’t even need to explain anything! They just looked into her eyes and were completely speechless. It was like looking at Miranda, not Meryl Streep! It was incredible, honestly. She just is that good.

Anne Hathaway revealed she wasn’t the first choice for her role in The Devil Wears Prada. While appearing on RuPaul’s Drag Race, she jokingly said she was actually the ninth actress considered for the part – meaning she had to work extra hard to convince the filmmakers she was right for the role.
Anne Hathaway shared with Variety that while she didn’t need to audition, she had to work hard to get the part. This included playfully writing “hire me” in the sand of the director’s zen garden! When she finally received the news, she was at home getting dressed. She recalled excitedly running into her living room, still half-dressed, and shouting, “I got The Devil Wears Prada!”

Luckily for Anne Hathaway, the studio’s first choice for the role turned it down multiple times. Director Frankel told Entertainment Weekly they offered the part to Rachel McAdams three times, but she was filming The Family Stone at the time. After the success of films like Mean Girls and The Notebook, McAdams wasn’t interested in doing another big, popular movie. According to Frankel, the studio really wanted her, but she was determined to pass on the project.
Kate Hudson turned down a highly coveted role, admitting the timing just didn’t work out. Speaking on Capital FM’s Capital Breakfast in February 2025, she said she regretted not making it happen, and immediately knew it wasn’t right for her when she first saw the script.
Meryl Streep—and Anne Hathaway’s performance in the 2005 Oscar-winning film Brokeback Mountain—convinced Streep to work with Hathaway, who had previously starred in The Princess Diaries. Director Garry Marshall remembered that Streep saw a scene from Brokeback Mountain, then met with Hathaway and called Fox executive Tom Rothman, saying she thought Hathaway was talented and they would collaborate well together.

Finding the right actress for Emily proved even harder. Frankel reviewed over 100 auditions for the role of Miranda’s tough assistant (including Tracie Thoms, who later auditioned for the part of Andy’s friend Lily). Ultimately, it was Emily Blunt, who showed up dressed casually, that really stood out to him.
Emily Blunt was already auditioning for the film Eragon at the Fox studio when a casting director asked her to read for The Devil Wears Prada. She recalled on The Late Late Show in May 2021 that she was in a hurry to catch a flight and felt flustered during the audition. She even admitted she was wearing sweatpants and didn’t look the part at all.
A few days after losing out on the role in Eragon, Emily Blunt received a call from casting director David Frankel. She told Variety that she was at a club in London and had to take the call from the bathroom. Frankel explained that while he liked her audition, the studio wanted to see her again, this time dressed more like the character.

Emily was originally conceived as an American character, but after Kate Blunt’s audition, the writers changed her nationality. Screenwriter McKenna was struck by how naturally Blunt delivered the sharp lines with her British accent. He told Entertainment Weekly that they immediately met to revise the script, adding British expressions and phrasing to better suit her performance.
Emily Blunt shared that she often draws inspiration from real life, even ‘stealing’ moments she observes from others. She recounted an instance on The Howard Stern Show where she overheard a frustrated mother in a supermarket scolding her child. The mother used a specific gesture – opening and closing her hand – while saying, ‘Yeah, I’m hearing this, and I want to hear this.’ Blunt found the moment so authentic that she incorporated the line and gesture into one of her films, and it’s now a memorable part of her performance.

Stanley Tucci played a key role in creating some of the most memorable lines in the film. After a lengthy search for the perfect actor to play art director Nigel, Tucci took the role just in time, as he told Entertainment Weekly. He then perfectly captured Nigel’s witty and sarcastic personality, even coming up with some of the character’s most famous lines on the spot.
Stanley Tucci recalled fondly a scene where Miranda first arrives at the office, causing a bit of panic among the staff. He told Buzzfeed they kept laughing uncontrollably during filming, and director David Frankel would playfully suggest lines for him to deliver. Ultimately, ‘Gird your loins’ made the final cut. Tucci also revealed to Entertainment Weekly that one of his own improvised lines, ‘Tits in!’, didn’t make it, but always got a big laugh on set.

One of Stanley Tucci’s most cherished memories from making movies is the connection he made with his now-family. He became close with his costar Emily Blunt and was invited to her 2010 wedding to John Krasinski. It was there he reconnected with Felicity Blunt, a literary agent, whom he later married in 2012. They now have two children, Matteo and Emilia.
It’s just… incredible to me. Stanley actually met Felicity, his future wife, at the premiere of The Devil Wears Prada back in 2006! And get this – he was still married to Kate, his amazing first wife, who had just been diagnosed with breast cancer. He said he made the movie, Kate started treatment, then came the premiere, and she lived for four more beautiful years after that. But the weirdest part? Felicity’s sister, Emily, and Kate actually talked at the premiere that night! Stanley has a picture of them together, and it’s just… so strange and touching to think about it all.

Rosario Dawson, similar to Anne Hathaway, clearly remembers when she found out she’d been cast as Lily – it was her 30th birthday in August 2005. While she felt good about her audition – having often played supporting, ‘best friend’ roles previously, she thought Lily would be a natural fit – she was still incredibly excited to get the news.
She told TopMob News she was at Dartmouth running a workshop for a new play by Alan Ball when she found out she’d been cast in The Devil Wears Prada. She remembered someone telling her the news over lunch in the cafeteria, saying, ‘You booked The Devil Wears Prada! Happy birthday!’ She added that it made for a great birthday memory.

Thoms recalls seeing Adrian Grenier, who was very popular during his time on Entourage, surrounded by fans. Instead of signing autographs, Grenier cleverly gave each fan a CD by his band, The Honey Brothers.
Thoms observed that Josh Grenier, who played Andy’s boyfriend Nate, used his platform to highlight his bandmates, since he wasn’t the lead singer. Thoms admired how Grenier thoughtfully acknowledged everyone’s support and actively returned that appreciation to his fellow band members.

Thoms had a wonderful time filming, describing it as feeling like they were working on Sex and the City – though it wasn’t quite like that show, it captured a similar New York vibe of people trying to navigate adulthood. However, she does have one regret about the experience.
She had a specific idea for how the Marc Jacobs bag would be used in the scene where Lily and Thoms both really wanted it. “I asked the props team to keep the bag hidden until we started filming, so my reaction would be real,” she explained. “The excited gasping and reaching for it – that all happened because the bag was truly beautiful.”
Oh my gosh, she’s just too amazing! She actually told TopMob News she totally plotted how to keep the purse from set – can you believe it?! She even had a whole scene planned where she’d ‘accidentally’ leave it in her trailer, but they CUT IT! She never even got a chance to go back and ‘forget’ it! It was so heartbreaking to hear, honestly. I’m still reeling from it!

As a huge fan, I remember being so surprised to learn that Meryl Streep actually didn’t go to Paris for the movie! Apparently, initially, nobody was scheduled to film those final scenes in the City of Light. Our director, David Frankel, was completely shocked by this! He told Variety that he managed to create a quick preview reel that thankfully convinced the studio to give the film a bigger budget and a summer release date. It was a real turning point for the movie, and I’m so glad he fought for it!
Hathaway and Simon Baker (playing Christian, her other love interest) traveled to France to film scenes for two days. However, Meryl Streep filmed all of her scenes in New York, as the studio said it would be too expensive to fly her to France.

Oh my gosh, you won’t BELIEVE what Meryl Streep did for The Devil Wears Prada! She totally committed to being Miranda, like, REALLY committed. She said it was ‘horrible’ because she basically shut herself off from everyone on set. She could hear the fun everyone was having, all the laughing and joking, and she was so bummed out! She even joked that being the boss meant missing out on all the good times. She said it was the last time she ever tried that whole ‘Method’ acting thing – can you imagine?! It’s just… dedication! I’m obsessed.
Before Meryl Streep adopted a more distant attitude, she offered Anne Hathaway a quick word of encouragement, as Hathaway told People magazine. Streep said, “I want you to know I think you’re going to be great, and I’m so happy to work with you…and that’s the last nice thing I’m going to say to you.”
That’s all.
