Emily in Paris cast reveal shocked reaction to surprising new romance this season: “I was like: ‘This is a joke'”

The new trailer for season 5 of Emily in Paris caused a stir when viewers noticed a surprising development: Emily’s ex-boyfriend, Alfie, is now seemingly interested in her best friend, Mindy (played by Ashley Park).

Over the last two seasons, Alfie (Lucien Laviscount) and Emily (Lily Collins) have been in a complicated, on-again, off-again relationship while living in Paris. Their romance is further complicated by Gabriel (Lucas Bravo), Emily’s former chef neighbor, creating an awkward love triangle.

Darren Star, the show’s creator, is known for taking risks, but this particular romance came as a surprise to even the actors, Collins and Ashley Park.

I had told her beforehand, and then we looked at the script. I’d seen the plot summaries, but wasn’t sure if those ideas would actually make it into the final version.

Park explained that Collins initially believed they were the victims of a prank. Collins agreed, saying she genuinely thought it was a joke.

Park immediately called Collins after reading the script. They were both surprised by the new plotline and worried about how it might affect their on-screen friendship.

Both of us were completely surprised,” Collins explained. Park added that this was largely because he’d only witnessed the very start of the project.

My main worry was how this would affect our characters and our close friendship. We didn’t know what would happen next, but it was good to be able to worry about it together.

“We’re both panicked about how are we going to fight and make up,” Collins said.

This season’s new romantic entanglement really shifted the group’s dynamic. It tested their friendship, but also created an interesting new connection with Laviscount, and surprisingly, they all worked well together.

Park shared their excitement about finally sharing scenes with Lucien. They were eager to explore a new and different dynamic between their characters and see each other in a fresh light.

Park sensed that Mindy was also surprised by the new relationship, and that’s why she wasn’t sure how to talk to Emily about it, especially considering Alfie.

Park believes Mindy’s reaction to this storyline is just as surprising as it was for the actors when they first read it. Mindy is really shaken up by what’s happening and, for the first time, she doesn’t want to burden Emily with her problems, trying to handle it on her own instead of confiding in her as she usually would.

Ultimately, that’s where things start to go wrong, but it also leads to a valuable lesson: they realize they can support each other, even when it’s difficult or challenging.

Secrets tend to come out eventually, and Emily and Mindy manage to deal with this tricky situation. Mostly, Emily—who is happily dating Marcello—is upset that her close friend wasn’t honest with her.

From what Collins said, it seems like Emily’s biggest problem is the lack of open communication – like they’re not sharing everything with each other. He made a good point that all friendships have their issues, and it sounds like this is where things are falling apart for them.

Just because a friendship hits a rough patch doesn’t mean it’s over. All strong friendships go through challenges, and it’s how you navigate those difficulties that truly strengthens the bond and shows how much the friendship means.
