It won’t be long before the popular movie, directed by Yorgos Lanthimos and praised by critics, becomes available for streaming. It’s coming to Peacock just under two months after it first hit theaters.
Starting December 26th, you’ll be able to watch Bugonia on NBCUniversal’s streaming services, according to Variety. The film, which is a remake of the 2003 South Korean movie Save the Green Planet!, was released in theaters on October 31st, following its premiere at the Venice Film Festival in September.
The film features a talented cast including Emma Stone, Jesse Plemons, Alicia Silverstone (known from Clueless), podcaster Stavros Halkias, and newcomer Aidan Delbis. It’s already gaining recognition, appearing on the Academy’s Oscar shortlist and earning praise for its Greek director.
Yorgos Lanthimos is a highly praised director known for his style, which often includes balanced, symmetrical shots, strange and unusual storylines, and unique camera work—elements reminiscent of the iconic Stanley Kubrick. Furthermore, the film 2001: A Space Odyssey served as inspiration for a scene in the 2003 movie Save the Green Planet!
On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has an 84% audience score and an 87% rating from critics. Reviewers praised its humor, absurdity, and the performances of Jesse Plemons and Emma Stone.
While Emma Stone and Yorgos Lanthimos’ previous film, Poor Things, did well, their latest movie hasn’t performed as strongly in theaters. Despite a production budget of $45 to $55 million, it only earned $39 million at the box office. However, the film is gaining a dedicated following and receiving award recognition, which should offset its lack of commercial success.
Emma Stone and Yorgos Lanthimos have worked together on four full-length movies and one short film. They began their collaboration in 2018 with The Favourite, and continued with Poor Things, Kinds of Kindness (released in 2024), and Bugonia. Their work together has earned them numerous awards and critical acclaim.
Bugonia Posed A Unique Challenge For Emma Stone
I was so impressed watching Emma Stone as Michelle Fuller, but I learned it wasn’t easy for her! She admitted being really nervous while filming, especially during the scenes where she was getting her hair done. It was a major transformation, and they could only shoot it once, so she was worried about making even the smallest reaction on camera. It’s amazing how she pulled it off so flawlessly!
Stone described her acting strategy for the scene: she pretended to be lifeless. “I basically played dead,” she said. Although she and the director, Lanthimos, had multiple cameras recording as a precaution, Stone focused on remaining completely still while getting her head shaved.
She explained that the final scene was filmed in one take. She’d been focused on remaining perfectly still throughout it. The filmmaker added that the Oscar-winning actress knew about the head-shaving beforehand, as it was included in the script, and had no issues with it.
Bugonia premieres on Peacock on Dec. 26.
