As a movie fan, I was really interested to hear Emma Watson – who I’ll always remember as Hermione Granger from the Harry Potter films – talk about her time in Hollywood. She shared how she really tried to recreate the close connections she made while filming those movies, but it often didn’t quite work out the way she hoped. It’s always fascinating to hear what it’s *really* like behind the scenes.
Harry Potter’s Emma Watson says she got her ‘A– Kicked’ in Hollywood
The actress known for her role in Little Women recently opened up about both her career and personal life, sharing many stories and experiences.
In an interview on Jay Shetty’s On Purpose Podcast, Emma Watson discussed how she draws on difficult personal experiences – specifically, the disappointment of hoping to form strong connections with colleagues and not finding them – to help her deliver authentic performances.
Emma Watson explained that she approached her roles expecting to form close, lasting bonds with her colleagues, a feeling she developed while working on the Harry Potter films. She openly admitted she went to set hoping to make friends.
The actress, 35, described a difficult time in her career, separate from her work on the Harry Potter films and in Hollywood, saying it was intensely painful.
Watson explained that people in these settings aren’t primarily seeking friends. They’re there to pursue opportunities and focus on their goals. They’re thinking, ‘This is my chance to succeed, this is my purpose, and I’m ready to work hard and build my career.’
It’s rare to work on a film series for twelve years, and we really became like a family. I tried to carry that sense of community into my other jobs, but it didn’t go well at all – I faced a lot of challenges and setbacks, to be honest.
Emma Watson shared that she realized she wasn’t resilient enough for intensely competitive situations, and it deeply upset her. She admitted it was a painful experience, but also expressed pride that she still felt things so strongly. She explained that being affected showed she still had an open heart.
Emma Watson is currently taking a break from acting to focus on her studies, and she hasn’t said when, or if, she plans to return to the screen.
