Emmerdale flashbacks reveal how Graham Foster was able to return from the dead in ITVX release

Emmerdale has revealed how Graham Foster (Andrew Scarborough) managed to survive such a series of extreme injuries – being hit with a weapon, struck by a car, falling from a cliff, and even supposedly being cremated.

The aftermath of these events deeply affected the village community. Rhona Goskirk (Zoe Henry) and Kim Tate (Claire King) were heartbroken by the loss, and Marlon Dingle (Mark Charnock) was wrongly convicted of murder and sent to prison.

Seeing Graham unexpectedly appear in Coronation Street earlier this month was a huge shock, and the explanation given today for how he lived is likely the most significant change to the show’s established storyline ever.

Graham had been secretly watching the area for weeks, narrowly avoiding being seen by Joe Tate. He finally revealed himself to Rhona.

She was shocked to find him standing in her living room, and she briefly wondered if she was imagining things.

I learned that April Windsor – little Amelia Flanagan, you know – had somehow gotten mixed up with a local drug dealing group. Someone mentioned her name, and honestly, I knew I had to go back and protect her from those awful people, Ray Walters and Celia Daniels. It just felt like the right thing to do, and I couldn’t shake the feeling she was in real danger.

Okay, so Rhona was totally confused, and thankfully Graham saved the day with some really clever flashbacks to 2020 to fill in all the gaps. It was a bit mind-bending though – the episode takes place on January 2nd, but this whole sequence was actually a flashback inside another flashback! Seriously, keeping track was a challenge, even for a movie buff like me.

He accidentally heard Kim talking with Al Chapman, who was plotting to kill him. While trying to escape, he was stopped by Rhona’s ex-husband, Pierce Harris.

Graham admitted he let Pierce live because he didn’t want to hurt her feelings, and believed she could only truly move on from his abrupt departure if she thought he was dead.

He managed to accomplish this thanks to a friend, DI Dent (Linda Armstrong), whom he’d known from his time in the SAS.

While in Iraq, Graham pretended to be dead several times, successfully leading Billy Fletcher and Priya Sharma to believe he had died. Luckily for him, they didn’t bother to confirm if he was actually gone.

Graham bribed the police and forensic investigators to secretly move him from the morgue and onto a ferry. He closely followed news about Rhona, and burdened by guilt over how Pierce had treated her and Vanessa Woodfield, he decided he needed to help April as a way to make amends.

However, did Graham then go on to kill Ray? The mystery unfolds further with more flashback scenes airing throughout the week.

Emmerdale airs weeknights at 8pm on ITV1. Stream on ITVX.
