Even With a Schedule Change, One Piece’s Anime Will Have the Same Problem

Since the One Piece anime began in 1999, it’s followed a weekly release schedule, just like the manga. Because a single manga chapter usually isn’t enough content for a full episode, the anime sometimes needs to stretch things out, which is common for long-running series. Compared to other popular anime like Bleach and Naruto, One Piece actually has very few completely filler episodes. Instead, the anime tends to slow down the story and weave in short, original scenes. This can sometimes cause debate among fans when the anime deviates from the manga. Despite these moments, the animation studio has consistently produced the series for many years, helping to make Eiichiro Oda’s epic story even more popular.

Since the Wano Country arc, One Piece has consistently delivered some of its best-animated episodes ever. Surprisingly, the animation quality continued to improve during the Egghead Incident arc. This allowed the anime to nearly catch up to the manga, leading to a six-month break mid-arc. Unfortunately, even that wasn’t enough to resolve ongoing production problems, and Toei Animation recently announced the series will now release only 26 episodes each year. Despite this significant change, the show’s pacing issues are expected to remain.

One Piece Will Adapt One Chapter Per Episode Even After the Schedule Change

The anime will be released in two parts, totaling 26 episodes throughout the year. This announcement surprised fans, who had varying reactions to the change in schedule, as many prefer watching episodes weekly. Unlike older, long-running anime, most shows now air seasonally, adapting just a few chapters of the source material per episode. New seasons typically come out yearly or every few years. One Piece stood out as one of the few series that continued to release episodes weekly while still maintaining a high level of animation quality.

It’s incredibly difficult to consistently produce high-quality animation for a weekly series, and even Toei Animation struggled to keep up. The anime frequently had to pause and show recap episodes because they couldn’t adjust the broadcast schedule. While releasing 26 episodes a year aligns with current trends, the anime will still adapt roughly one chapter of the manga per episode, so the overall pace of the story won’t be significantly faster.

The anime will pause for three months starting in January 2026, after finishing the current storyline. When it returns in April 2026, it will begin a new, exciting arc that fans have been waiting for. During the break, the creators might adjust the pacing of action scenes or add extra content, meaning viewers will simply have to wait a bit longer for new episodes.

One Piece’s Schedule Is Still Better Than Weekly Episodes

Although the show will maintain a similar release speed, the animation studio can actually improve its workflow with the new schedule. Despite the impressive visuals, some animation inconsistencies were noticeable. Toei Animation had to prioritize episodes, focusing extra effort on key ones while using simpler animation for less action-packed installments. This uneven approach often frustrated fans, particularly because Sanji frequently received less screen time and development compared to characters like Luffy and Zoro.

Fans were disappointed with the most recent episode, particularly with how a popular character was portrayed, as many hoped for more focus on his development. The upcoming schedule adjustment should help create a more consistent story and also give the animation team a better work-life balance. Animators frequently face demanding deadlines and high expectations from viewers. Fortunately, the series only needs to adapt 26 chapters annually, giving the studio a sufficient amount of source material to work with.

Toei Animation frequently finds itself playing catch-up with the original manga, which makes long-term planning difficult, especially since the manga sometimes publishes fewer chapters per year than the anime. The Elbaf arc is particularly strong, consistently delivering exciting battles and surprising plot twists that will captivate viewers. Even a quick look at the arc’s impressive full-page illustrations shows just how much work the animators will have to do to adapt it for the screen.
