Although Buffy the Vampire Slayer aired for seven seasons, only three episodes focused on Halloween. This might seem odd for a horror-themed show, but because every episode already had spooky elements, Halloween itself didn’t feel as special. It’s also funny that, within the show’s world, monsters usually stay home on Halloween – everyone’s in costume, and it’s more trouble for them to come out! However, those three dedicated Halloween episodes are still full of supernatural fun, even with the regular vampires taking a night off.
It’s worth noting that the Halloween episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer only appeared in seasons two, four, and six. Here’s a ranking of those three episodes, from least to most enjoyable.
3) “All the Way” – Season 6, Episode 6

Of the three Halloween episodes in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the Season 6 installment, “All the Way,” is generally considered the weakest. A big reason for this is that the episode focuses on Dawn, a character many fans disliked when she was introduced. Despite this, “All the Way” still has some enjoyable moments.
This episode focuses on Buffy trying to look after her sister Dawn, who disobeys her and falls in with a group of school friends who are secretly vampires. During the ensuing fight, the Scooby Gang struggles to get Buffy and Dawn to work together. Meanwhile, Xander and Anya’s wedding planning causes unnecessary drama, but the highlight of the episode is watching Willow’s descent into darkness continue.
2) “Fear Itself” – Season 4, Episode 4

The fourth season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer featured a particularly strong episode that was also the most frightening of the three. By this point in the series, Buffy and her friends are in college and attend a frat party with a haunted house. Unfortunately, a summoning portal is opened, and when Oz’s blood interacts with it, a trapped demon is unleashed. This demon gains power by bringing everyone’s deepest fears to life.
Fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer often point to this episode as the start of a long-running, hilarious joke. It begins when Xander asks Anya to wear a scary costume, and she chooses a giant rabbit, revealing her surprising fear of bunnies. The episode effectively builds tension with its spooky haunted house and the terrifying fears it brings to life. But the real fun comes with the unexpected twist: the demon they’re fighting turns out to be incredibly small. It’s a brilliant, funny ending to the show’s Halloween tradition.
1) “Halloween” – Season 2, Episode 6

The first Halloween episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which aired during its second season, is widely considered the best. The show was really finding its stride at this point, and this episode perfectly showcased its strengths. In it, Buffy and her friends discover that vampires hide indoors on Halloween night, but soon realize there are other, more dangerous threats lurking.
The group first met Ethan Rayne, a warlock and old enemy of Giles. He opened a costume shop and put a curse on the costumes: anyone who wore them would transform into the character they were dressed as. This caused problems when Spike attacked, as Buffy, dressed as an 18th-century woman, was unable to fight. However, Xander, transformed into a soldier, finally got a chance to be the hero. Many fans consider this Halloween episode to be not only the best of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but one of the scariest episodes of any show.
