While Goku and Pikachu are incredibly popular anime characters, many others are also well-known. When it comes to characters that generate the most revenue, one particular cat-themed mascot is a strong contender. Warner Bros. Discovery has consistently invested in anime, and a new film planned for 2028 demonstrates this commitment. It appears Warner Bros. is now expanding into the world of Sanrio characters with a recent announcement.
Warner Bros. Pictures Animation and New Line Cinema are releasing a new Hello Kitty movie on July 21, 2028. The studios announced that this will be Hello Kitty’s first time appearing in a major theatrical release, promising an adventure for audiences of all ages. Details about the plot are currently unknown, as is whether the film will be fully animated or a combination of animation and live-action. While Hello Kitty has starred in movies and animated series before, this new project highlights the growing popularity of anime in North America. The film will be directed by Leo Matsuda, known for his work on Wreck-It Ralph and Big Hero 6, and the screenplay is by Dana Fox, who has written for Wicked, Cruella, and How To Be Single.
The Long History of Hello Kitty

Since Hello Kitty debuted in 1974, she’s become a huge financial success for her creator, Sanrio, generating nearly $85 billion worldwide through cartoons and merchandise. Despite being a popular character for decades, Hello Kitty has only appeared in three movies, all released in Japan. This new film marks the first Hello Kitty movie to be released in North America, and it will be interesting to see if the character evolves as a result.
Hello Kitty has been making news lately, and it’s usually for surprisingly unusual reasons – specifically, its unexpected collaborations with other popular franchises. The adorable Sanrio character has already teamed up with series like Mobile Suit Gundam, Bleach, One Piece, Jujutsu Kaisen, Sailor Moon, and Naruto. One particularly striking collaboration was with Tomie, a famously creepy character from the horror manga by Junji Ito. While this pairing didn’t result in a horror anime, it really highlights Hello Kitty’s ability to appear alongside characters from almost any anime series.
