It looks like Netflix is about to buy Warner Bros. Discovery, and the deal could happen very soon. This purchase would significantly reshape the entertainment industry. Movie theaters may see fewer new releases, and those that do get films might not stay in theaters for very long. However, Netflix is likely to leverage Warner Bros. Discovery’s popular franchises and content to create a huge amount of new movies and TV shows, potentially more than anyone can watch.
Netflix is excited to add Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings to its streaming library, but DC Comics is potentially an even bigger win. With James Gunn now leading DC, things are already looking up. Many fans are especially hopeful about the possibility of Zack Snyder returning to work on DC projects, as he previously mentioned he’d be open to reviving his previous DC universe if Netflix gained control. Here’s a look at the DC projects Zack Snyder started that Netflix could potentially bring back to life.
7) Cyborg
Cyborg, played by Ray Fisher, is central to Zack Snyder’s Justice League, and his story of accepting his transformation is a key part of the film. While plans for a Cyborg solo movie fell through, both director Zack Snyder and Fisher remain enthusiastic about working together again in the future.
6) New Gods
In Zack Snyder’s Justice League, the heroes face off against the armies of Apokolips and get a taste of just how powerful that world is when Steppenwolf creates a portal. Ava DuVernay had planned to explore this universe further with a movie called New Gods, based on a script by Tom King. Although that project was canceled, Jack Kirby’s iconic characters deserve a place in the DC film universe.
5) Ben Affleck’s Batman Movie
Matt Reeves originally signed on to direct a Batman movie with Ben Affleck as the star. While Affleck hadn’t seemed eager to play Batman again lately, the return of Zack Snyder could potentially change his perspective. They worked very well together on previous Batman films within the DC Extended Universe, and their collaboration was often praised.
4) Deathstroke
Joe Manganiello’s portrayal of Deathstroke appears briefly in Zack Snyder’s Justice League because he was originally planned to be the villain in a separate Batman movie and even have his own film, directed by The Raid‘s Gareth Evans. Manganiello is still eager to reprise the role, and it sounds like that might happen in the future.
3) Man of Steel 2
Instead of making a direct sequel to Man of Steel, Zack Snyder decided to bring Superman and Batman together in one film. While that movie wasn’t a complete success, many fans would love to see Henry Cavill star in another solo Superman film. Numerous directors have previously submitted strong concepts for Man of Steel 2, and it’s likely at least one of them would still be eager to direct it.
2) Justice League 2
The seemingly random, unsettling moments in the DC Extended Universe’s films weren’t included without a purpose. Zack Snyder envisioned a larger story for his Justice League sequels, and even though details about those plans – like the idea of Lois Lane having Batman’s child – have proven divisive, they still deserve attention. It would be great to see the Justice League team reunite, considering they never really got a fair chance to shine.
1) Harley Quinn vs. The Joker
Although the movie Suicide Squad wasn’t a success for the DC Universe, the actors were perfectly cast. Margot Robbie’s portrayal of Harley Quinn was so popular she reprised the role multiple times, and could do so again if Netflix decides to move forward with another project. Plans for a Harley Quinn vs. The Joker film were revealed in 2017, and the concept still has potential, particularly after the disappointing reception to Joker: Folie à Deux, which also featured the two characters.
