Every Green Lantern from Earth, Ranked

In a galaxy far and wide, there exists a law-enforcing team known as the Green Lantern Corps, which assigns superheroes to keep peace in specific regions of the universe. Our planet Earth belongs to Sector 2814, and among the most renowned figures patrolling this sector is Hal Jordan, the iconic Green Lantern who made his debut during the Silver Age. Interestingly, there was also a Golden Age Green Lantern, but this version was moved to an alternate reality called Earth-2 in retcons (retroactive continuity changes). As for the main DC Universe Earth, the storyline has remained largely consistent, even after the New 52 reboot. Prior to Hal Jordan, a being from Ungara (also within Sector 2814) named Abin Sur served as the Green Lantern in this sector.

While that, however, since Jordan, multiple Green Lanterns have emerged on Earth in the comic books. To date, a total of 10 individuals born on Earth have assumed the role of protectors within their sector, including Alan Scott, the original Golden Age Lantern hailing from Earth-2.

10) Keli Quintela

Keli Quintela, also known as Teen Lantern, finds herself at the bottom of the list for now due to her youth and lack of experience, yet there’s plenty of time for her to climb higher. She acquired her powers through intelligence rather than having them bestowed upon her by a ring. By designing a gauntlet that harnesses energy from the Central Power Battery on Oa, she gained access to Lantern Corps power and joined Young Justice. Although not officially selected, she was given the opportunity to train with the Lantern Corps on Oa under the guidance of heroes like John Stewart, Simon Baz, and Guy Gardner. This paves the way for her eventual role as one of Earth’s protectors.

9) Alan Scott

Alan Scott, an intriguing Green Lantern character, hails from the Golden Age and is a part of the Justice Society of America in DC Comics. He was the initial Earth-born Lantern, yet he grappled with power constraints. Unaware of the Green Lantern Corps, he utilized his powers and the Lantern power battery (employing magic) to combat crime during his time. Regrettably, he possessed unusual vulnerabilities, as his ring was susceptible to wood. Moreover, much of his career was fraught with challenges due to problems concerning his sexuality, which made him a target for manipulation by figures like J. Edgar Hoover, compelling him to collaborate with the U.S. Government, frequently against his principles.

8) Simon Baz

Simon Baz, born in America, encountered racism wherever he went due to his Muslim faith, particularly after the 9/11 attacks when he was just 10 years old. This constant bullying and prejudice forced him and his family into hardship, leading him to resort to petty car theft for survival. Following an arrest, he was deported to Guantanamo Bay, where he was allegedly tortured as a suspected terrorist. However, fate had other plans, and the power ring found him, transforming him into the latest Green Lantern. The Guardians of the Universe were seeking a replacement for the Green Lantern Corps, as they aimed to overthrow it with an evil Third Army. Baz was recruited to aid in the preservation of their Corps. Over time, Simon Baz has collaborated with the Justice League of America and even earned Batman’s trust.

7) Guy Gardner

Upon Abin Sur’s demise, his ring sought a new bearer. It found two potential candidates on Earth: Hal Jordan and Guy Gardner. Initially, Hal was chosen, but later, when Hal and John Stewart were incapacitated, Guy got his chance to become a Lantern. In one of his initial skirmishes, the power battery detonated in his face, sending him to the Phantom Zone. There, Sinestro subjected him to cruel treatment that left him in a coma and with minor brain trauma. Upon awakening, Guy was no longer the same individual and had developed the brash, arrogant, and aggressive demeanor familiar to DC fans. Despite his best efforts, he continues to face obstacles (like the Guardians) that hinder his quest to be a hero.

6) Sojourner “Jo” Mullein

As a seasoned veteran, having served as both a soldier and an NYPD officer, I was unceremoniously let go for blowing the whistle on a fellow officer’s misconduct. My life took a turn when a Guardian found me in my lowest ebb, offering me a chance at redemption. However, unlike my fellow Lanterns, I was assigned to a sector so remote and devoid of numbering that it hadn’t witnessed a murder in five centuries. Making my debut in ‘Far Sector’ #1 (2020), I am the latest Green Lantern hailing from Earth. During the ‘Dark Crisis’, I returned home to aid in protecting our planet, leveraging my military background much like John Stewart.

5) Jade

In the realm of DC Comics during its contemporary era of New Earth, Jade was introduced for the first time in issue #25 of All-Star Squadron back in 1983. Her father is none other than Alan Scott, the original Green Lantern, while her mother is a supervillain called Thorn. To protect them from their villainous mother, Jade and her twin brother, Todd (Obsidian), were given up for adoption. Both siblings inherited metahuman abilities due to their father’s contact with magical energy, and Jade’s powers mimicked those of a Green Lantern albeit without the bond to Oa. She was linked to the Green Lantern storylines through her romantic involvement with Kyle Rayner. In today’s comics, Jade’s abilities are also tied to the Starheart, but she still maintains connections to the Green Lanterns, even though she’s not technically a member of the Corps.

4) John Stewart

For many DC Comics enthusiasts of a certain generation, it’s John Stewart they picture as Earth’s Green Lantern. This is due to his role as the Green Lantern in the widely-adored 1990s Justice League animated series. In the comics, he first appeared in Green Lantern Vol. 2 #87 (1972), and the Guardians selected him to fill in for Hal Jordan after Guy Gardner was injured. After Jordan left in 1985, Stewart took over as Earth’s sole Green Lantern. Over time, the Green Lantern Corps reshaped their operations, enabling Stewart, Jordan, and Kyle Rayner to perform distinct duties concurrently. In contemporary DC Comics, John holds the position of leader for the Green Lantern Corps and is part of its Honor Guard.

3) Jessica Cruz

2013 marked the introduction of Jessica Cruz in the fifth volume of Green Lantern. Originally a troubled young woman who had seen her friends brutally murdered by mobsters, Jessica struggled with crippling anxiety as a result. Yet, when the Crime Syndicate took over DC Comics, she was thrust into action quickly. Following Sinestro’s murder of Earth-3’s Hal Jordan, the ring chose Jessica and compelled her to attack her hometown. Batman intervened, helping her regain control over the ring’s power. Eventually, Hal Jordan appeared and guided Jessica in harnessing the ring’s power to become a hero in her own right. During the Darkseid War, her corrupted ring was destroyed, but she was later bestowed with an authentic Green Lantern ring, making her the new guardian of her sector.

2) Kyle Rayner

Just as comic book enthusiasts have debated over whether they prefer Wally West or Barry Allen as their favorite Flash character, so too do they argue about Hal Jordan versus Kyle Rayner when it comes to the Green Lantern. This debate arose post-“Crisis on Infinite Earths,” with Rayner and West stepping into the roles of the seasoned heroes, adding a youthful edge to the DC Comics universe. The artistic profession of Rayner made him an instant hit among fans, as he could create remarkable objects using his power ring instead of relying on the raw strength used by Jordan and John Stewart. As a result, Kyle Rayner became one of the most adored Green Lanterns in DC Comics lore and continues to rank among Earth’s mightiest members of the Green Lantern Corps.

1) Hal Jordan

Amongst the Green Lantern Corps, a team known for their power and esteem, it’s an Earth-born hero who holds the greatest prominence. Initially bestowed with the responsibility to safeguard Earth following Abin Sur’s demise, Hal Jordan is typically the one selected when reinforcements are needed. In his active years, he is often relied upon to fulfill this role. Despite occasional lapses, such as when he transformed into Parallax or when he committed a murder and was ousted from the Corps, he has played a pivotal role in shaping Earth’s Green Lantern contingent. Moreover, Jordan has saved the cosmos more times than most Lanterns, and arguably, any other superhero.
