Every Jack Ryan Actor, Ranked

Jack Ryan, the famous character created by Tom Clancy, has been portrayed by five different actors, and each one brought a unique interpretation to the role. Unlike many spy heroes, Ryan isn’t a typical action star. He’s an intellectual – a CIA analyst, historian, and devoted family man who prefers to analyze and solve problems rather than rush into conflict. This makes him a challenging character to cast, as it takes more than just physicality to capture his essence. While actors like Daniel Craig easily fit the mold of a James Bond, becoming Jack Ryan requires someone who embodies intelligence and strategic thinking. This explains why the role has been recast so often, with different actors depicting Ryan at various stages of his life and career in both movies and television.

I’ve always loved Jack Ryan, and it’s been so cool to see different actors take on the role! From Alec Baldwin kicking things off in The Hunt for Red October to the recent series on Prime Video, I thought it would be fun to look back at the five guys who’ve played him and how they each brought something unique to the character.

5) Ben Affleck

Ben Affleck’s experience playing Jack Ryan was particularly challenging. He starred in The Sum of All Fears, a film that showed Ryan as a rising CIA analyst, a younger version of the character Harrison Ford previously portrayed. Unfortunately, the film’s plot – involving neo-Nazis smuggling a nuclear bomb into Baltimore – proved problematic. It was released in May 2002, only nine months after the 9/11 attacks, making the subject matter especially sensitive.

The movie The Sum of All Fears came out at a difficult time. Released shortly after the 9/11 attacks, the film—which featured a terrorist bombing—had trouble connecting with audiences. While it earned $193 million and was financially successful, viewers weren’t receptive to another Jack Ryan adventure so soon after the real-life tragedy. Ben Affleck, who played Ryan in the film, never reprised the role.

4) Chris Pine

I was really excited when Paramount decided to revisit Jack Ryan in 2014, it had been a while since The Sum of All Fears and I thought a fresh start was a great idea. They wisely decided to show a younger Ryan just beginning his career, and casting Chris Pine in Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit felt like a good choice – he was the fourth actor to take on the role! It was a little disappointing to learn, though, that this new film wasn’t actually based on any of Tom Clancy’s books, which had always been a big part of what I loved about the character.

As a big Tom Clancy fan, I was really hoping this movie would capture the spirit of his books, but it just didn’t quite get there. Chris Pine is a good actor, but he didn’t have the star power to really elevate the film. It showed how Jack Ryan became who he is – joining the Marines after 9/11, getting injured in a helicopter crash, and then being recruited by the CIA – and the plot about stopping a Russian economic attack was solid enough. It felt like a Jack Ryan movie, but honestly, it didn’t measure up to the previous films and unfortunately, it seemed to signal the end of their attempt to reboot the franchise. It was just…forgettable.

3) Alec Baldwin

You know, it’s funny – the very first actor to play Jack Ryan, Alec Baldwin, is probably the one most people have forgotten! But he was in what I think is still the best Jack Ryan movie – The Hunt for Red October. It came out in 1990 and was just amazing. While Baldwin did a good job as Ryan, honestly, Sean Connery totally blew everyone away as Captain Ramius. He really made that movie special!

The film centers on Captain Ramius, who sails a highly sophisticated Soviet submarine towards America intending to defect. However, U.S. officials suspect he’s planning an attack. It’s up to analyst Jack Ryan to persuade the government that Ramius is offering a valuable gift – himself – and to avoid any hostile response when he enters American waters. The movie closely follows the original novel and will especially appeal to those interested in military details and submarines, as it gets those aspects very accurate. While Alec Baldwin gives a strong performance as Ryan, he’s ultimately outshone by his fellow actor.

2) John Krasinski

John Krasinski, best known for his comedic role in The Office, has successfully transitioned into action-packed roles. He demonstrated this in 2018 with his portrayal of Jack Ryan in the Prime Video series, Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan. The show began with Ryan as a CIA analyst working at a desk, noticing unusual financial activity. This led him on a dangerous mission across Europe and the Middle East to track down a dangerous terrorist leader. As the series progressed, Ryan became increasingly involved in the field work and direct action.

John Krasinski played the character Ryan for a total of four seasons on the Prime Video series, and later reprised the role in the film Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan: Ghost War. The show consistently received increasingly positive reviews, and critics particularly liked how Krasinski portrayed Ryan as a relatable, ordinary person who was both intelligent and capable of taking action when necessary.

1) Harrison Ford

Many consider Harrison Ford the definitive Jack Ryan. He portrayed the character in two films: Patriot Games (1992) and Clear and Present Danger (1994). What set his portrayal apart from others was that these movies showed Jack Ryan as a more mature, established figure. Patriot Games features Ryan, a former CIA analyst, protecting his family from terrorists while on vacation in London. In Clear and Present Danger, he’s promoted to a high-ranking intelligence position and discovers a secret, unauthorized war being waged by the US government against a Colombian drug cartel.

Following his success as Han Solo in Star Wars and Indiana Jones, Ford took on the role of Jack Ryan. Though the Jack Ryan film series only included two movies, Ford’s performance is considered one of the best portrayals of the character ever seen on screen. He truly brought Jack Ryan to life and remains the most iconic actor to play the part.
