The Apothecary Diaries has quickly become a hit anime, and fans can look forward to more content later this year with both a third season and a new movie planned. The creator recently discussed these and other details in an interview.
Hyūganatsu, the creator of The Apothecary Diaries, recently discussed the series with scrmbl, revealing some behind-the-scenes details. When asked about the inspiration for the story and its world, Hyūganatsu clarified that the setting isn’t actually ancient China, as many fans believe. They explained that the timeframe is more accurately described as the early modern period, stating, “It’s not ‘ancient’ at all.”
The Apothecary Diaries Creator Debunks Major Fan Theory
Hyūganatsu explained that the historical inspiration seemed to come from Japan’s Edo period and earlier – almost 1000 years ago – but didn’t accurately reflect the series. The creator hadn’t strictly adhered to one era; instead, they freely borrowed appealing elements from various periods of Chinese history and reshaped them for the story. As an example, the creator included woodwind instruments, even though they weren’t widely used until relatively recently.
People often misunderstand the series; it’s not at all ‘ancient,’ according to the creator. The setting, while heavily inspired by China, isn’t actually located there. There are also elements of Japanese culture woven in, which the creator attributes to their own background. Interestingly, the main character, Maomao, was initially conceived as being much older than she ended up being.
Maomao Was Almost an Older Mom With Kids
The creator, Hyūganatsu, originally envisioned the main character as an older woman with three children. However, they worried that this wouldn’t appeal to a wide audience. Ultimately, they decided to make the character younger, between 14 and 17 years old, to increase the series’ popularity, which is why Maomao is 17 in the final version of the story.
Fans of The Apothecary Diaries have a lot to look forward to! Season 3 of the anime is scheduled to begin airing this October as part of the Fall 2026 lineup, with the second half coming in April 2027. Plus, a brand-new movie will be released in Japanese theaters this October. It’s going to be a busy and exciting time for fans of the series!
