While many people think of certain shows for their Christmas episodes, King of the Hill quietly delivers some of the best holiday-themed installments in adult animation. Now is the perfect time to revisit these episodes and appreciate just how well they capture the spirit of the season. The show approaches the holidays in a unique and heartwarming way, setting it apart from more traditional holiday specials.
Even though King of the Hill might not be the first Christmas show that comes to mind, it actually has some truly memorable holiday episodes. These episodes vary from heartwarming to hilariously chaotic—sometimes both at once! Below, you’ll find a ranking of every Christmas episode of the series, from least to most enjoyable.

7). The Unbearable Blindness of Laying
The second season of King of the Hill introduced its first Christmas special, “The Unbearable Blindness of Laying.” This episode kicks things off with a strange premise – Hank temporarily loses his sight after unexpectedly walking in on his mother. The story focuses on Hank connecting with his mother’s new boyfriend, but it’s ranked lower on the list because the Christmas setting feels more like a backdrop than a central theme. While it’s a heartwarming story about Hank’s personal growth, the plot could have realistically occurred at any time of year.

6). ‘Twas the Nut Before Christmas
The Season 5 episode, “Twas the Nut Before Christmas,” revisits Bill’s seasonal depression, using the holiday season as a backdrop. The episode shows Bill becoming overly enthusiastic about making others happy, quickly becoming addicted to the feeling and unwilling to stop even as the year progresses. He even impulsively tries to help someone who is clearly using him, though this storyline doesn’t develop beyond the initial episode.
This moment is surprisingly important to Bobby and Connie – it’s even considered a major life event when they reminisce during the Hulu revival, especially after a few drinks in Bill’s Santa-themed bouncy house. However, Bill views it as one of his less impressive stories, though it’s not the most emotionally impactful one you’ll hear.

5). Ms. Wakefield
The King of the Hill episode “Ms. Wakefield” is a surprisingly heartwarming, though melancholy, Christmas story. It was the last Christmas special from the show’s original run on Fox, and a fitting finale. The episode centers around Ms. Wakefield, a lonely woman who returns to her childhood home to spend her final days, seeking a peaceful end to her life after losing everyone she loved.
The story perfectly balances the sadness of her request with the humor of her desperate attempts to get inside. Hank and his friends react in over-the-top ways, but the heartwarming ending restores the festive spirit. It’s a really enjoyable story that you’ll want to watch again and again.

4). Pretty, Pretty Dresses
One of the most emotionally difficult episodes is from Season 3, called “Pretty, Pretty Dresses.” It’s a well-made episode that powerfully shows Bill at his lowest point, but it’s incredibly hard to watch. In it, Bill experiences a manic episode and decides to dress as his former wife, Lenore, pretending to be her.
This creates a powerful scene where Hank supports his friend but also has to bring him back to reality. It’s one of the most moving episodes featuring Bill throughout the series, and the Christmas setting actually emphasizes how lonely his life is. However, it’s not an episode most people would choose to watch during the holidays because of its sadness.

3). The Father, the Son and J.C.
The Season 6 episode “The Father, the Son and J.C.” is unique because it’s the only time Hank explicitly tells someone “I love you,” and it doesn’t go well. He briefly gets a promotion to manager, but Buck Strickland quickly takes it away after Hank’s emotional outburst. This leads to a deeper, and sometimes difficult, conversation between Hank and his father about their shared history.
Cotton and Hank haven’t always gotten along, but this episode brings them closer than ever before. While it’s not the most entertaining Christmas special to watch repeatedly (the last two on the list are better for that), it perfectly captures the heartwarming feeling you want from a Christmas story.

2). Livin’ on Reds, Vitamin C and Propane
I always enjoy rewatching the King of the Hill episode “Livin’ on Reds, Vitamin C and Propane.” It’s just a really funny holiday story. Hank decides to drive an 18-wheeler to Arizona to deliver furniture to his mom before Christmas, and things quickly go off the rails. He gets teased by professional truckers, Bill and the guys sneak onto the truck and cause trouble, and Peggy and Luanne are attempting to write a Christmas song about the whole trip. It’s a chaotic, but heartwarming, episode.
This episode is packed with hilarious moments and is widely considered the funniest Christmas installment of King of the Hill. It’s so good, you can enjoy it any time of year, not just during the holidays! If you’re looking for a Christmas episode to re-watch, this is the one—and it even includes a catchy song during the credits.
1). Hillennium
When it comes to the best Christmas episode, Season 4’s “Hillennium” really stands out. It cleverly uses the Y2K scare to explore the widespread anxieties people felt at the time. While newer viewers might not fully grasp the fear surrounding Y2K—it truly felt like the world could end—Hank perfectly captures that feeling as he becomes increasingly distrustful of technology.
Some of the funniest ‘Hank’ episodes happen when he gets really fixated on an idea and takes it too far. This one’s a perfect example – Hank pushes everyone away because he’s convinced technology is going to ruin everything and society is about to collapse. Luckily, a really funny hallucination helps him turn things around for a surprisingly great Christmas. It’s a good episode to watch to kick off the new year!
