The popular film KPop Demon Hunters recently partnered with McDonald’s to create a series of fun animated shorts, released a year after the movie first appeared on Netflix. KPop Demon Hunters is Netflix’s most successful film to date, achieving this milestone in just one year. To keep fans excited while they wait for the sequel, McDonald’s brought back the characters – HUNTR/X and the Saja Boys – in these promotional shorts.
I was so excited when McDonald’s teamed up with KPop Demon Hunters earlier this spring! They released two awesome meals based on the movie – one inspired by HUNTR/X and the other by the Saja Boys. It was like a fun competition, a “Battle for the Fans,” to see which meal people loved more. And leading up to it, they dropped some really entertaining KPop Demon Hunters shorts, which I’ve collected below, ranked from most to least fun!
5). Derpy
Derpy, Jinu’s tiger companion, played a role in the KPop Demon Hunters and McDonald’s collaboration—appearing on a collectible card needed to unlock the final content, which are now quite valuable online. However, Derpy didn’t have much screen time in the promotional shorts. The short featuring Derpy is the briefest of the series and appears last on the list. Unfortunately, Derpy’s only action is spinning a McDonald’s meal box, which might disappoint fans eager to see more of this character from the film.
4). Saja Boys Breakfast Meal
The short promo for Jinu’s breakfast meal, featuring the Saja Boys, is a lighthearted and entertaining piece. It cleverly brings back the older women from the original film and shows the Saja Boys charming them while expressing gratitude for their support of the meal. This short effectively captures the playful and memorable nature of the demonic boy band from KPop Demon Hunters, and emphasizes what made them different from HUNTR/X. It offers a distinctly different feel compared to the other promotional shorts created for this collaboration.
3). HUNTR/X Meal
The HUNTR/X crew definitely had more fun promoting their HUNTR/X meal. Unlike the Saja Boys, who try to appear very cool, HUNTR/X came across as much more friendly and down-to-earth in their promotional video. The short features them sneaking into a McDonald’s to try the meal (with a guest appearance from Bobby!), and it’s full of clever references. They include a nod to Mira’s famous line, “Nice,” from the original movie, and even bring back the catchy “Soda Pop” song that Zoey loves. It all feels very energetic and lively, which perfectly suits the HUNTR/X group.
2). Battle For The Fans
The series started strong with “Battle For The Fans,” immediately escalating the funny rivalry between HUNTR/X and the Saja Boys. Like the original movie, HUNTR/X excitedly announce a sponsorship deal with McDonald’s, only to be one-upped by the Saja Boys revealing they have one too. The short episode includes clever references – like Abby’s abs being reimagined as hash browns – and a fantastic closing joke that pokes fun at fans who want Rumi and Jinu to become a couple. It’s simply full of enjoyable moments.
1). Battle For The Fans Finale
The collaboration between KPop Demon Hunters and McDonald’s concluded with an exciting finale to the ‘Battle For The Fans’ series. The animated short showed HUNTR/X finally defeating the Saja Boys – with a playful nod to Rumi’s character – and provided a satisfying end to the entire series of shorts. When viewed together, the shorts feel like a great revisit to the world of KPop Demon Hunters while fans anticipate the sequel.
Even if you’re not a fan of the groups themselves, the show features new performances from both of their singers. This marks the first-ever live performance by Saja Boys, and we finally get to hear HUNTR/X perform “How It’s Done” – a song they haven’t played live in a year, after “Golden” received a lot of awards attention. It was a fantastic way to conclude everything.
