The Jedi and the Sith are the two central forces in the Star Wars universe. Though fundamentally opposed, believing in different paths, they are constantly at war with each other. However, at the beginning of the prequel films, the Sith have been in hiding for a thousand years, making their conflict with the Jedi less prominent. During this time, the Jedi serve as galactic peacekeepers, and they all rely on lightsabers as their primary weapons during their often dangerous missions.
Jedi Knights choose lightsaber colors that project peace and reassurance during their travels, aiming to inspire positivity. Sith Lords, however, intentionally use colors meant to instill fear in their opponents. Here’s a complete list of lightsaber colors in Star Wars, along with the characters who wield them, presented in a ranked order.
8) Orange

Users: Baylan Skoll and Shin Hati
Okay, ranking lightsaber colors is tough, but I have to put orange last for now. It just feels…underexplored. We saw Baylan Skoll and Shin Hati wielding orange blades in Ahsoka, and it totally fit their mercenary vibe – showing they weren’t really on anyone’s side. Honestly, I’m hoping Season 2 gives orange a chance to shine and prove me wrong, maybe earn a higher spot on the list!
7) White

User: Ahsoka Tano
Ahsoka Tano uses many different lightsabers, but not because she damages them. Each change in lightsaber reflects her growth as a Force user. When she fights with her white lightsabers, it shows she’s connected to the Force and independent, not tied to any specific group or rules.
6) Yellow

Users: Rey Skywalker, Jedi Temple Guards, Asajj Ventress, Dagan Gera
The yellow lightsaber isn’t very popular yet because it hasn’t had a major role in the live-action Star Wars films and shows. It’s been used by the Jedi Temple Guards in The Clone Wars and by Asajj Ventress in some other stories. Rey briefly wields a yellow lightsaber, but it needs another prominent appearance to become more well-known.
5) Black

Users: Tarre Vizla, Pre Vizla, Bo-Katan Kryze, Sabine Wren, Moff Gideon, Maul, Din Djarin
Black is the most enigmatic color here, and it’s what makes the Darksaber so distinctive. While the Darksaber is primarily a symbol of status within Mandalorian culture, it’s also a capable weapon, as demonstrated by fighters like Maul.
4) Purple

User: Mace Windu
Samuel L. Jackson is known for playing unique characters, but it’s hard to make a memorable impression in the vast Star Wars universe. To help his character stand out, he chose a purple lightsaber, representing a balance between the light and dark sides of the Force. Because of this, it’s unlikely Star Wars will ever give another official character a purple lightsaber.
3) Green

This list includes prominent Jedi and Force-users such as Yoda, Qui-Gon Jinn, Kit Fisto, Saesee Tin, Luminara Unduli, Quinlan Vos, Ahsoka Tano, Luke Skywalker, and Ezra Bridger.
Green lightsabers don’t get as much attention as blue ones, but they’ve been wielded by some of the most powerful Jedi ever, like Grand Master Yoda and his compact, but incredibly effective, lightsaber.
2) Red

The Sith featured include Darth Sidious, Count Dooku, Darth Maul, Darth Vader, Savage Opress, Asajj Ventress, Kylo Ren, and the Inquisitors.
A true lightsaber duel feels incomplete without a red blade—except for the famous fight between Anakin and Obi-Wan on Mustafar. There’s something inherently threatening about that crimson glow, as anyone who’s faced a red lightsaber in a film like Rogue One: A Star Wars Story can attest.
1) Blue

Notable Jedi and Force users include Obi-Wan Kenobi, Plo Koon, Ki-Adi Mundi, Aayla Secura, Shaak Ti, Anakin Skywalker, Kanan Jarrus, Ahsoka Tano, Cal Kestis, Luke Skywalker, Rey Skywalker, and Ben Solo.
As a huge Star Wars fan, I always think the blue lightsaber is the most recognizable – and for good reason! That moment in A New Hope when Obi-Wan gives Luke Anakin’s old lightsaber? It felt like everything changed. Plus, it’s cool that other important Jedi, like Ahsoka Tano and Cal Kestis, also wield blue blades. It really solidifies its place as the classic lightsaber color, in my opinion.
