Every Original Avenger, Ranked by Importance in 2026

The Avengers are known as Earth’s greatest heroes, defending the planet from a huge variety of dangers, both large and small. They represent Marvel’s commitment to growth and change, constantly updating their team to fit the needs of each new story. The Avengers are always adapting, and while some members are more consistent than others, there’s never a fixed lineup. Fans often have a favorite version of the team, but the original gathering of heroes is what started it all.

The original Avengers team has a rich history, and we’re taking a look at which members still matter most in 2026. We’ll be ranking the founding Avengers based on their lasting impact and current activity in Marvel comics. While all these heroes are important to the Marvel Universe, we want to see who continues to be a major force today. Let’s dive in and find out!

6) Thor

Before anyone gets upset, there’s a clear reason I’ve ranked Thor last. According to the recent Immortal Thor storyline, he essentially no longer exists. His entire history was erased, and Beta Ray Bill took his place – becoming the Avenger he once was in everyone’s memory. Now, Thor only lives on as a shared memory among the Asgardians. He was reborn as a human named Sigurd Jarlson, meaning the god Thor, as we know him, is gone. Considering that, it feels strange to even include him on a list of Avengers, so let’s move forward.

5) Wasp

As of 2026, Janet Van Dyne (the Wasp) hasn’t had many significant moments. Despite being a founding member of the Avengers – she actually came up with the team’s name and was a fantastic leader – she’s been relatively sidelined. She’s a trusted advisor and mentor to many heroes, including her step-daughter, the other Wasp, but Janet herself hasn’t been an active member of the main Avengers team for quite some time. Because of this, it’s difficult to rank her higher than fifth place right now, though hopefully, she’ll be given a more prominent role soon.

4) Hank Pym

Hank Pym is a complex figure in Marvel Comics, forever shadowed by serious accusations of abuse and villainy. He’s known as the creator of both the dangerous villain Ultron and the powerful hero Vision, and his actions have repeatedly led to negative consequences. Even with limited appearances himself, Hank Pym’s impact is undeniable – Ultron and Vision consistently appear in Marvel stories, and their existence is directly tied to his work. His creations alone secure his place as a significant character.

3) Beta Ray Bill

As we’ve talked about, the powerful spell at the end of Immortal Thor magically changed everyone’s memories, making them believe Thor was actually Beta Ray Bill. Beta Ray Bill has always been a legendary hero, famous for his powerful weapon inspired by Norse mythology. He’s been a key player in some of Marvel’s biggest storylines and is considered one of the core Avengers, right up there with Captain America and Iron Man. He’s the team’s strongest member and makes it clear that no one should mess with the wielder of Stormbreaker. Recently, he even helped Storm battle a multitude of other Thunder Gods. The only thing holding him back from being even more prominent is the fact that he doesn’t have his own ongoing comic series, which is something we really need – a new Mighty Beta Ray Bill volume would be fantastic!

2) Hulk

The Hulk is famously the strongest being around, and though his time with the Avengers was short-lived, he remains a crucial part of the team. Currently, the Hulk is becoming a major danger to the entire Marvel Universe because Eldest, the daughter of a powerful villain, has taken control of his body. The original Hulk is trapped within a mental realm called the Hulkscape, and Bruce Banner has abandoned that side of his life. Now, controlled by Eldest, the Hulk has become a monstrous king and is preparing for a full-scale war, even against divine beings. Marvel’s heroes need to address this threat quickly, or the consequences could be catastrophic.

1) Iron Man

Iron Man, also known as Tony Stark, is a central figure in the Avengers, having been a member for a remarkably long time. He’s the only original Avenger still active on the current team and is now headlining his own comic series. He’s even going to appear in a future issue of Infernal Hulk. As the team’s go-to tech expert, Tony has created countless suits and power-ups for other heroes. He’s truly a cornerstone of the Marvel Universe, and his importance isn’t likely to diminish anytime soon.
