It’s disappointing news for video game enthusiasts. The long-awaited adaptation, in development since the game first launched in 2000, has been cancelled, meaning fans won’t get the movie or TV show the original game deserved. The director, who was also a producer and writer on the planned TV series, is now sharing what led to this outcome.
Derek Kolstad, the director known for his work on the John Wick films, has confirmed that the planned Hitman TV series for Hulu is no longer moving forward. He told The Direct the project is “dead in the water.” Originally announced in November 2017, the series – intended to be based on the popular video game – was to be produced by Hulu and Touchstone Television (formerly Fox 21 Television Studios). Kolstad was slated to write the pilot episode, but it was never produced.
A Hitman Adaptation Never Got a Fair Shake

Kolstad explained that despite his affection for the project – stemming from his love of the game and character – it’s been put on hold indefinitely. He clarified that while he can write the script, getting it actually produced into a movie or show is the real challenge, and currently, there’s no movement on that front. This assessment seems accurate, particularly given the recent trend of other adaptations being cancelled or cut short, like the disappointing end of Wheel of Time.
The Hitman video game series has struggled to find success on the big screen. Two previous movie attempts – one in 2007 starring Timothy Olyphant, and another called Hitman: Agent 47 in 2015 – both received very poor reviews (17% and 8% on Rotten Tomatoes, respectively). It seems a truly great adaptation – whether a movie or TV show – may never happen. Despite this, a new Hitman game is still planned for release at some point.
