Since the early 2000s, Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean has been a hugely successful film series. It started as a fun, adventurous story about curses and ghost ships, and grew into a large, complex saga with unforgettable villains and surprising plot twists, building its own distinct world. While a sixth film is planned, and fans are hoping it captures the original excitement, it’s a good time to remember that not all the movies have been equally strong, even with the popular Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) at the helm.
As a huge fan of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, I’ve always felt the series has a fantastic mix of comedy, action, and genuine suspense. But let’s be real, not every installment has been a masterpiece – some feel like they’re just trying to keep the franchise going. So, I decided to rank all the Pirates of the Caribbean films, from the ones I could barely sit through to my absolute favorites.
5) Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

Let’s face it, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides isn’t most fans’ favorite installment. It’s not a bad movie, but it doesn’t quite capture the same emotional impact as the earlier films. This time, Jack Sparrow gets involved in a quest for the Fountain of Youth, joining forces with new companions and battling the infamous Blackbeard (Ian McShane). While Johnny Depp is still fun to watch, the story feels a bit weak. As the fourth movie in the series, the original characters aren’t around, and the film attempts to refresh itself with new faces. However, this leads to a slower pace, a lack of strong chemistry between the actors, and a story where the danger doesn’t feel truly significant.
The movie has some enjoyable action, but it doesn’t really make you invested in the characters. Jack, in particular, starts to feel a little stale and loses his spark, likely because his jokes get repeated too often. The villain also isn’t as compelling as previous ones. Overall, the film feels like a placeholder between better installments in the series – it’s mildly entertaining, but ultimately forgettable and stands out as the weakest film so far.
4) Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales

After a long wait, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales finally arrived, and it initially seemed like a good return to the series – Jack Sparrow was back, along with fresh faces and a spooky new villain. The plot involves Jack being hunted by Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem), while Henry Turner (Brenton Thwaites) and Carina Smyth (Kaya Scodelario) attempt to fix things. However, the movie doesn’t quite deliver on its potential. It introduces a new couple connected to familiar characters, seemingly trying to recapture the magic of Elizabeth (Keira Knightley) and Will (Orlando Bloom), but it doesn’t quite work. Similarly, Salazar, who should be a terrifying antagonist, falls flat.
The movie relies heavily on references to past films without offering much explanation, and the main character, Jack, often feels like a supporting player. While there’s some action and occasional humor, none of it feels significant to the overall story. It’s good to see the series continuing, but without the familiar nostalgic elements and Johnny Depp’s presence, the film lacks substance and ultimately doesn’t add anything new or worthwhile.
3) Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl

Putting Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl here might surprise some, as many consider it the best in the series. While it launched the franchise, it doesn’t quite reach the same heights as later installments. The problem is, it lacks that truly grand, epic feel. The movie follows Jack Sparrow as he joins forces with Will and Elizabeth to defeat Captain Barbossa and lift the curse on his ship. It’s a fun, well-made adventure that effectively introduces the characters and establishes the stakes, but it’s relatively straightforward and doesn’t go beyond being a solid, enjoyable film.
It’s not surprising the original didn’t have plans for sequels – that came later. However, looking back, it feels a bit basic compared to what the series became. While the story is clear and well-written, allowing the main character to really shine, it ultimately falls lower on the list because the later installments were simply better in every way – more emotionally resonant and with bigger action sequences.
2) Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest

For me, this is where the Pirates of the Caribbean saga really grabbed me. Dead Man’s Chest proved these films could be more than just a good time – they could be genuinely epic! The story follows Jack Sparrow desperately trying to settle his debt with Davy Jones, played brilliantly by Bill Nighy, while Will and Elizabeth find themselves in a seriously tricky situation as the pirate world gets darker. Honestly, the design of The Flying Dutchman and the villain are stunning, and everything feels so well-planned – you really buy into the danger and understand what’s at stake.
The movie’s length is its main drawback, though some viewers might find it a little excessive. However, that length allows you to truly feel the impact of the characters’ decisions, which is what begins to make the story feel grand and sweeping. It’s easy to become engrossed, particularly because this is the first time we see Jack confidently leading as a captain and captivating the audience. If you enjoyed his character in the first movie, you’ll likely fall in love with him here. This is where the series really finds its footing, building genuine scale and suspense.
1) Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End

This is where the Pirates of the Caribbean series truly comes into its own, and the original story reaches its peak. All the plot threads converge, with Jack, Will, and Elizabeth’s stories reaching satisfying conclusions, and the film delivers the biggest action and highest stakes yet. At World’s End sees the pirates joining forces against Davy Jones and Beckett, with Jack, as always, relying on daring and luck to stay alive. While the movie has a lot going on and can feel cluttered at times, it still creates a sense of epic scale, filled with huge battles, surprising twists, heartfelt sacrifices, and definitive endings for the main characters. It’s a very emotional film, and many of the most memorable scenes from the entire series happen in this one.
What really sets this movie apart is its portrayal of the pirate world as a complex political landscape, filled with shifting alliances, long-standing feuds, and intricate rules. Unlike previous films, the supporting characters are well-developed, adding significant depth to the story. The movie also successfully creates a sense of genuine danger, where anything can happen, even for a Disney production. Every action has consequences, and Jack Sparrow faces truly challenging obstacles that test him like never before. It’s this combination of a compelling story, high stakes, and pure entertainment that makes it the best installment in the series.
