The Jedi Order actually hinders its own cause in the Star Wars Skywalker Saga. In the prequel films, there’s a surplus of Jedi compared to the number of planets needing protection, giving them considerable freedom – even throughout the Clone Wars. But as the war progresses, it’s evident the Jedi are oblivious to what’s really happening, prioritizing their reputation over addressing critical problems. This weakness lets Emperor Palpatine successfully carry out his carefully planned scheme to dominate the galaxy. However, the Dark Lord of the Sith didn’t achieve this alone.
Throughout the prequel films, Palpatine consistently utilizes a different apprentice to do his bidding while remaining hidden from view. Though each serves a similar function – obeying every command – they all possess unique qualities. Below is a ranking of every Sith Lord featured in the Skywalker Saga, ordered by their level of power.
4) Count Dooku
In Star Wars: Attack of the Clones, Count Dooku, a former Jedi, replaces Darth Maul, leaving his old friends shocked by his turn to the dark side. Dooku was a highly skilled student of Yoda’s and considered the most gifted swordsman in the Jedi Order, but he felt the organization was moving in the wrong direction. Sadly, his alliance with Palpatine shows he’s merely a tool – skilled with a lightsaber and persuasive with words.
3) Darth Maul
If Star Wars: The Phantom Menace was all we ever saw of Darth Maul, he’d likely rank lowest on this list. But spending almost ten years fueled by anger unlocks a new potential within the Dathomirian warrior. Maul makes a significant comeback in Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels. Though he never surpasses his original master, he demonstrates himself as a powerful Force user with a strong grasp of the dark side.
2) Emperor Palpatine
Palpatine represents a unique form of villainy, obsessively focused on dominating the entire galaxy. His incredible power is the reason he dares to aim so high, and it’s rarely met with any real opposition. Even Yoda, one of the most skilled Jedi Masters, struggles to put the Emperor in a difficult situation. The sole reason he isn’t ranked higher on this list is that he inadvertently equips the one being capable of defeating him with the means to do so. He essentially sets his own downfall in motion.
1) Darth Vader
Palpatine focuses on Anakin because he recognizes Anakin as a potential obstacle to his rise to power. This is because the young Jedi is the Chosen One, as foretold in prophecy. It takes Darth Vader several years to realize Palpatine’s true intentions, but once he reconnects with his feelings, he defeats his master by throwing him into a reactor. While Palpatine does return in the sequel films, this is only possible because Anakin has become one with the Force. Learn more about the prophecy.
