Every Spider-Man: Brand New Day Character Sadie Sink Could Be Playing (Who AREN’T Jean Grey)

Sadie Sink will be joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the upcoming film Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and fans widely believe she’ll be playing Jean Grey. Jean is a well-known character from the original X-Men team, famous for her strong mental and telekinetic powers, and for being one of the first people to connect with Charles Xavier. With the Multiverse Saga beginning, introducing Jean Grey now seems like a natural fit.

The trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day suggests that Sadie Sink’s character will be a villain, not a hero. This leaves the possibility open for a surprising twist – maybe Marvel is telling a completely different story than we expect, and Sink is playing someone else entirely. Some early guesses about her powers, like her being the fire-based hero Firestar, are now unlikely. So, what other explanations could there be?

3. Shathra

When actress Sink was initially cast in Brand New Day, rumors circulated that she would be playing Shathra, a wasp goddess who opposes spider-totems. This character previously hunted Spider-Man when his powers were changing. The Brand New Day trailer shows Spider-Man’s powers are indeed mutating, and includes a scene with a web cocoon, which strongly suggests a connection to spider-totem lore. This makes Shathra a plausible character addition. Marvel could easily revise Shathra’s backstory, presenting her as a wasp totem created to oppose Spider-Man.

Okay, so the chances of this particular theory being right are starting to feel pretty slim. We saw a very specific type of power in the Brand New Day trailer – definite psychic abilities. And honestly, the character played by Sink just feels more psychic than anything else. Shathra, on the other hand, was all about raw strength, and we haven’t seen that yet. I’m not saying it’s impossible, but right now, it seems like a long shot.

2. Typhoid Mary

Another popular idea is that Sophie Sink in the MCU is similar to the villain Typhoid Mary. In the comics, Typhoid Mary is connected to the Hand – the same group appearing in the Brand New Day storyline, as shown in the trailer. Typhoid Mary has Dissociative Identity Disorder, meaning she has multiple personalities, each with its own unique ability – one of which is telepathy. The trailer hinted at a kind of psychic control that spreads like an infection, which would fit this connection.

However, it doesn’t seem very probable that we’ll see Typhoid Mary appear. Alice Eve already played the character in Season 2 of Iron Fist. Marvel is starting to recognize the old Netflix series – as we’ve seen with Jon Bernthal reprising his role as the Punisher in Brand New Day – and a quick recast doesn’t feel right at this moment. While Typhoid Mary could potentially fit into the larger story, the evidence supporting her appearance isn’t very convincing.

1. Rachel Grey

Another possibility is Rachel Grey, a somewhat obscure X-Men character. In the comics, she’s the daughter of Cyclops and Phoenix, originating from a dark future. The design of the new character, played by Sink, does remind us of some versions of Rachel, and she would fit well into the story. It seems her psychic abilities are being exploited by Damage Control, who may be using her to locate people with her mind. Plus, this storyline involves the Multiverse and plenty of time travel, making anything possible.

Honestly, the idea that Rachel Summers is going to be a major player feels a little forced. It just doesn’t quite fit that she’d be the one shrouded in so much mystery. I’m leaning towards Marvel blending elements of Rachel’s backstory into Jean Grey’s – maybe we’ll see Jean working as a tracker, like a “Hound,” for Damage Control. That would make a lot more sense, and it still allows them to bring in the MCU version of Jean Grey we’re all expecting. But for now, we’re stuck waiting for more clues to confirm what’s really going on.
