The new series, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, feels like a fitting celebration of the franchise’s 60th anniversary. Starfleet Academy has been a part of Star Trek’s history since the very beginning, first appearing in 1965. The series is also full of fun nods to past episodes and shows, and even provides closure for some older characters by revealing what happened to them after we last saw them – including a dedicated memorial wall.
The new series, Starfleet Academy, takes place far into the 32nd century, so distant in the Star Trek timeline that it’s difficult for many familiar characters to appear without involving time travel. However, the show has already brought back some returning faces, suggesting more could join them. This raises the question of which characters would naturally fit into this future story.
10. The Crew of the USS Discovery

As a huge Star Trek fan, I’m really excited about Starfleet Academy! It takes place during the same time as Season 5 of Star Trek: Discovery, which opens up so many possibilities. Imagine seeing the crew of the Discovery – after their jump to the 32nd century – walking the halls! We already know Jett Reno, played by Tig Notaro, will be a regular, and Mary Wiseman is returning as Sylvia Tilly, which makes perfect sense considering her work rebuilding the Academy. Honestly, it feels like almost anyone from the later seasons of Discovery could easily make an appearance, and I’m hoping they do!
9. The Doctor

Robert Picardo is reprising his role as the Doctor, now as a teacher at Starfleet Academy. Having been active as the Emergency Medical Hologram since his time on the USS Voyager, he’s guided many aspiring Starfleet officers. It’s wonderful to have Picardo back, and he’s been enthusiastically sharing news about this special 60th anniversary episode online.
8. Agent Daniels

Agent Daniels, first seen in Star Trek: Enterprise and played by Matt Winston, was a time agent from the 31st century whose job was to safeguard the timeline. The character is still active in the 32nd century, now going by Dr. Kovich and played by David Cronenberg. Given that Starfleet Academy seems likely to feature time travel at some point, Daniels/Kovich would be a fitting character to include in those stories.
7. Benjamin Sisko

Avery Brooks, who played Commander Sisko, contributed to the show’s 60th anniversary by having some of Sisko’s dialogue highlight the central theme of Starfleet Academy. While Sisko’s name might be added to the memorial wall, his character’s story already provides a way for him to still be present – he traveled into the Bajoran wormhole and became their Emissary, declaring he would exist outside of normal time.
6. Q

Considering characters who aren’t bound by time, John de Lancie’s Q is a strong possibility. Although Q seemingly died in Star Trek: Picard, this powerful being has always treated time loosely, so a return isn’t out of the question. The Q haven’t appeared in centuries, but they’re known for being unpredictable and playful, and Q would likely enjoy causing mischief with Starfleet Academy students.
5. Guinan

It used to be believed that El-Aurians, like Guinan as played by Whoopi Goldberg, simply lived for hundreds of years. However, a recent line in Star Trek: Picard Season 3 hinted that they actually only age when they want to, leaving open the possibility that Guinan could still be alive in the 32nd century.
4. Laas

Laas was one of many Changeling scouts dispatched by the Founders to Deep Space Nine. Played by J.G. Hertzler, he was unique among them, establishing a new Great Link with other scouts. His ultimate fate remains unclear – he connected with Odo at a vulnerable moment and may have contracted a bio-weapon engineered by Section 31 – but it’s possible he’s still alive if he overcame that threat.
3. Odo

Although René Auberjonois, who played Odo, sadly passed away in 2019, his character’s story leaves open the possibility that Odo could still exist in the 32nd century. His final act – restoring the Great Link – allows for this, and Odo is honored with a mention on the memorial wall at Starfleet Academy.
2. Pelia

Carol Kane plays Chief Engineer Pelia in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, and because of her unique background, she might still be alive in the far future. Pelia is a Lanthanite, a race that is nearly immortal, and was born way back in the 28th century BC! While it’s unlikely she’ll appear in the first season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds – that would give away that she survived the events of the show – she could easily show up in the second season of Starfleet Academy.
1. Kassia Nox

Kassia Nox is an El-Aurian character and a commander on Star Trek: Lower Decks. Because she’s relatively young – only in her 30s – it’s plausible she could still be alive in the 32nd century. It would be interesting to see her character connect Lower Decks with Starfleet Academy in a future story.
