After five seasons, the hit show Stranger Things has come to an end, and the finale felt like a major cultural moment. The final season was released in three parts – the first four episodes dropped on Thanksgiving, another set on Christmas Day, and the last episodes on New Year’s Eve. The finale, titled “The Rightside Up,” was deeply emotional for many viewers who had followed the characters for almost ten years. While some fans disagreed with the ending, particularly Eleven’s sacrifice, most agreed that the show’s quality and scope were exceptional for television.

The popularity of Stranger Things always depended on the dangers coming from the Upside Down, which we learned in Season 5 is a doorway to a desolate place called the Abyss. 5) Demodog

As a huge Stranger Things fan, I remember being genuinely creeped out when the Demodogs showed up in Season 2. They’re basically the next stage in the Demogorgon’s evolution, but instead of being these towering monsters, they’re these incredibly fast, four-legged creatures. What’s really terrifying isn’t necessarily a single Demodog – a determined person could probably take one on – it’s when you’re facing a whole pack of them. They hunt together, almost like a hive mind, and they just relentlessly pursue you. They were really used as the Mind Flayer’s main force, and honestly, they made the woods around Hawkins feel completely unsafe. You just knew something was always lurking, ready to swarm you.

4) Demobat

First appearing in the fourth season, Demobats are flying creatures that add another layer of danger to the Upside Down. They have grasping tails and sharp claws, and can quickly attack in large groups. The most heartbreaking instance of their use involved the death of Eddie Munson (Joseph Quinn). Because they hunt using sight and sound, Demobats make the Upside Down feel even more threatening – nowhere is truly safe from their aerial view. Though not as strong as other monsters, these creatures act as Vecna’s (Jamie Campbell Bower) constant, mobile scouts, making them a crucial part of his ability to monitor everything.

3) Demogorgon

The Demogorgon quickly became a defining monster in horror, and its debut in the first season of Stranger Things established the show’s overall style. This creature, resembling a human with a flower-like head full of teeth, hunted people in Hawkins using both stealth and brute strength. What made the Demogorgon so frightening was its ability to travel between dimensions through small openings, meaning danger could come from anywhere. Even as the show introduced more complicated villains, the Demogorgon remained a significant threat – for example, its powerful appearance in a Russian prison. Though not all-powerful, seeing a Demogorgon in the shadows still creates a deep, instinctive fear that other monsters, like Demodogs and Demobats, just don’t match.

2) Mind Flayer

The Mind Flayer is the source of all the trouble in Hawkins, first appearing as a huge shadow monster in the second season of Stranger Things. It’s essentially the leader of a terrifying hive mind, controlling all the other creatures and able to take over people’s minds using particles from another dimension. This isn’t just a monster; it’s a powerful, evil force from beyond our world that wants to destroy everything, seeing people as expendable tools. We even learn in the final season that it corrupted Henry Creel, setting him on the path to becoming Vecna. It’s considered the second most dangerous threat because of its incredible intelligence and its godlike power, which is beyond anything humans can understand – making it one of the most formidable enemies the group has ever faced.

1) Vecna

Vecna is considered the biggest threat in Stranger Things because he doesn’t just physically attack his victims – he mentally tortures them. First appearing in season four, Vecna preys on people wrestling with past trauma and guilt, using their painful memories against them before killing them. What makes him especially frightening is that he was once a person named Henry Creel, which fuels his intense hatred and makes his actions feel deeply malicious. His power to invade minds and create terrifying illusions is arguably the scariest ability seen in the entire series. Even after his defeat, Vecna remains the most frightening villain because of the lasting emotional damage he inflicted on those who survived.
