Every Villain Confirmed in Mortal Kombat 2

The 2021 Mortal Kombat movie faced a difficult launch, debuting in theaters and on HBO Max during the peak of the pandemic. Despite this, it became Warner Bros.’ most popular movie of 2021 among those released simultaneously in theaters and on streaming. This success quickly led to plans for a sequel, and even a third film before the second one was released. To make Mortal Kombat II even better, writer Jeremy Slater was brought on board to build out the story’s world, fix issues from the first film, and finally show the iconic tournament hinted at in the original’s ending. Director Simon McQuoid also returned, aiming to further develop his vision for the movie based on the popular video game.

Scheduled for release on May 8, 2026, Mortal Kombat II is a much bigger and more ambitious film than the first. The story focuses on Emperor Shao Kahn (played by Martyn Ford) and his attempt to take over Earthrealm. This forces the heroes to fight through the entire tournament while dealing with dangers from all sides. To reflect this increased scope, the sequel features a wider range of villains from the Mortal Kombat games, bringing many of the most recognizable characters to the big screen.

8) Revenant Kung Lao

Max Huang is back as Kung Lao in Mortal Kombat II, but this version of the character is quite different from the heroic Shaolin monk we saw in the first film. Trailers show Kung Lao fighting Liu Kang, even though he died in the previous movie. The most likely explanation is that Kung Lao has been resurrected as an undead warrior, controlled by Quan Chi’s dark magic and forced to serve Outworld. This is consistent with how revenants – undead, mind-controlled fighters – are portrayed in the games. However, because Shang Tsung can change his appearance, it’s also possible he’s disguising himself as Kung Lao to deceive Liu Kang.

7) Kano

Josh Lawson is returning as Kano in Mortal Kombat II. Kano, a mercenary from the Black Dragon clan, died in the first film (Mortal Kombat 2021) after switching sides throughout the story. While details are scarce, Kano will be back in a surprising way. Known for being a criminal and arms dealer who only looks out for himself, Kano is a consistently untrustworthy character in the Mortal Kombat universe. Lawson’s performance as Kano in the first film was a highlight, balancing dark humor with a real sense of danger, and it seems the sequel will explore that unpredictable side of the character even more.

6) Baraka

The new Mortal Kombat II film features Baraka, played by CJ Bloomfield, a fierce warrior and loyal general to Shao Kahn who has appeared in many Mortal Kombat games. Bloomfield, previously known for his role in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, convincingly portrays the character with a look straight from the games – including his signature retractable blades and the distinct, jagged teeth of the Tarkatan people. Karl Urban, who plays Johnny Cage, has praised a fight scene with Baraka as one of his favorites, suggesting the character will be central to a major action sequence.

5) Sindel

Ana Thu Nguyen will play Queen Sindel, a royal from the realm of Edenia with a complex history tied to Shao Kahn’s invasion. In the games, Sindel has been both Kitana’s mother and Shao Kahn’s queen, changing sides throughout the different storylines. Her addition to the movie, especially as it focuses on Kitana (played by Adeline Rudolph) and the Outworld royal family, introduces a powerful villain with a strong stake in the film’s political conflicts. Fans of the games will be pleased to know that the movie version of Sindel will feature her iconic white hair and signature sonic scream attacks, as seen in promotional posters.

4) Noob Saibot

Joe Taslim, who played Sub-Zero in the 2021 Mortal Kombat movie, is back for the sequel, Mortal Kombat II, but this time as Noob Saibot. His character transforms into Noob Saibot after being killed by Scorpion (Hiroyuki Sanada) in the first film. This change is exciting for fans of the games, as Noob Saibot is a famous, shadowy fighter known for his unique look. The latest trailer hints at a showdown between Noob Saibot and Scorpion, promising a powerful and emotional fight due to their history. Taslim signed on for multiple Mortal Kombat films after his first appearance, and his return as Noob Saibot shows the franchise plans to fully develop his character’s story over the three planned movies.

3) Quan Chi

Damon Herriman, known for voicing Kabal in the 2021 Mortal Kombat movie, is back in Mortal Kombat II as Quan Chi. This powerful sorcerer from the Netherrealm is incredibly dangerous because he controls the dead. In the games, Quan Chi is famous for bringing people back to life and twisting them to his will – he’s the one who turned Bi-Han into Noob Saibot and tricked Scorpion into seeking revenge for decades. By including Quan Chi in Mortal Kombat II, the filmmakers are suggesting he was secretly pulling the strings even in the first movie, influencing events from the very beginning.

2) Shang Tsung

Chin Han is back as Shang Tsung, the powerful sorcerer who was the main villain in the 2021 movie. At the end of that film, he warned that Shao Kahn’s army was coming to attack Earthrealm, which sets up the main storyline for the sequel. Shang Tsung is known in the games as the host of the Mortal Kombat tournament – he’s a master manipulator who relies on trickery and stolen power instead of just strength. In the sequel, he’s part of a much bigger threat, working alongside Shao Kahn, Quan Chi, and the entire Outworld army. This means he’s no longer the sole villain, but one piece of a far more dangerous group.

1) Shao Kahn

The main villain in Mortal Kombat II is Shao Kahn, the ruthless emperor of Outworld, who wants to conquer Earthrealm. This drives the entire story. Actor and bodybuilder Joe Ford, with his impressive physique, brings a truly intimidating presence to the role. Shao Kahn is known for his skull helmet, his powerful Wrath Hammer, and his disregard for the tournament’s rules – and the movie keeps all of those iconic details. The film focuses on Earthrealm’s heroes battling Kahn’s forces directly, making him the ultimate enemy that the first 2021 movie hinted at with its closing scene.
