Everything We Know About Weapons’ Aunt Gladys (Including the Prequel Movie)

Zach Cregger’s film, Weapons, created a lot of buzz before it came out, largely due to its intriguing central mystery. The movie’s marketing campaign was deliberately secretive, hinting at the sudden disappearance of 17 children and leaving audiences eager for answers. Once released, Weapons revealed that Aunt Gladys was responsible, and Amy Madigan’s performance as the villain quickly established her as a new horror icon. Madigan is captivating in every scene, keeping viewers thoroughly on edge, and her work earned her an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress this year.

By the time the story Weapons concluded, the disappearance of Alex Lilly’s classmates had been explained, but many questions remained about Aunt Gladys. The character sparked a lot of fan speculation about her past and who she really was. Weapons deliberately leaves things ambiguous, but provides enough clues about Gladys for viewers to form their own informed opinions. Here’s a rundown of everything we currently know about her.

Everything We Know About Weapons‘ Aunt Gladys

Aunt Gladys is definitely a witch with the unsettling ability to control others. The origins of her powers, however, remain a mystery. While developing the story, the creator, Cregger, gave Madigan a choice: was Gladys once an ordinary person driven to witchcraft by a life-threatening illness, or was she always a supernatural being? Cregger isn’t sure which backstory Madigan chose. Regardless, Gladys comes to Maybrook, Pennsylvania, with the goal of stealing people’s energy to regain her own strength, starting with Alex’s parents and then moving on to Alex’s classmates.

The book Weapons includes conversations that support the idea that Alex has a normal family background. For example, Alex’s father tells him that his mother’s aunt, Gladys, is coming to stay because she’s ill. Later, we learn Alex’s parents haven’t seen Gladys in fifteen years and she wasn’t at their wedding, suggesting she’s a relative on his mother’s side. However, things get confusing when Gladys tells the school principal she’s Alex’s aunt and refers to Alex’s mom as her “baby sister.” If Gladys is telling the truth about being family, it’s unclear whether she’s Alex’s aunt or great-aunt. It’s possible Alex’s father simply wasn’t familiar with Gladys and misspoke, or that Gladys deliberately misled the principal to maintain a deception.

Something really struck me while watching the movie. Gladys tells Alex she hasn’t seen him since he was a baby, but that doesn’t quite fit because he’s clearly in elementary school! If she hasn’t seen him in 15 years, she couldn’t have seen him as a baby. It makes you wonder if she’s lying to try and get closer to him, since he’s so important to her plan, or if she’s just seen baby photos. It’s sparked a lot of debate about who Gladys really is, but I think it’s pretty clear she’s connected to Alex’s family. Alex’s parents definitely have some history with her, even if it’s unclear, and his mom feels like she has to take care of her. It seems Gladys knew the Lilly family before the events of the movie, which means she specifically chose them – probably because they’re family and an easy way to get what she wants.

If a different cut of the movie Weapons had been released, viewers would have learned the full story behind the character Gladys. Director Cregger removed a chapter focused on Gladys, believing the film was more effective with a mysterious villain. This deleted scene would have explained what Gladys was doing before she arrived at the Lilly family’s home. Cregger hasn’t shared many details about this chapter, likely because it will form the basis of a planned prequel film about Aunt Gladys. For now, actress Madigan isn’t planning to reveal anything either. She told W Magazine that she prefers to hear what audiences think happened, and doesn’t want to spoil the mystery by sharing Gladys’ backstory herself.
