Ex-Assassin’s Creed Boss Puts a Hidden Blade to Ubisoft in $1 Million Lawsuit

Marc-Alexis Côté, who previously led the Assassin’s Creed franchise, is suing Ubisoft after leaving the company last year. He had been with Ubisoft for more than two decades.

To be honest, the timing feels a little chaotic. News of Côté leaving came only a few weeks after the publishing company finalized its partnership with Tencent, a large Chinese company.

As a big fan, I was really excited to hear about this! Basically, Ubisoft is creating this new studio called Vantage Studios to focus on things like Assassin’s Creed and other huge games they own. And the best part? Tencent is helping fund it all, which means we could see some amazing new projects!

People are claiming that Côté was forced to leave by the new management, and the former franchise head plans to make that case in court.

According to a lawsuit, Patrice Désilets (Côté) is claiming Ubisoft owes him nearly $1 million. He alleges he was unfairly let go and is therefore entitled to severance pay.

Ubisoft released a statement last October expressing sadness over Marc-Alexis Côté’s departure. They thanked him for his significant contributions, especially for the role he played in developing the Assassin’s Creed series into the popular franchise it is today.

The situation was more complicated than it initially seemed. Côté’s lawsuit claims that the new job Ubisoft offered him, after a two-week break for consideration, was a significant and unwelcome downgrade, as they were also looking to bring in someone to lead the franchises, essentially taking over his responsibilities.
