Netflix is well-known for its big-budget movies, which often attract a lot of attention. While many people subscribe to watch new seasons of their favorite TV shows, Netflix continues to release films that would have once been major summer releases in theaters. Just in the past year, they’ve premiered movies like Carry-On starring Taron Egerton, Back in Action with Cameron Diaz and Jamie Foxx, and the popular animated series, KPop Demon Hunters. Although these star-studded, action-packed films get a lot of buzz, Netflix has a hidden strength that often gets overlooked.
Three years ago today, Netflix released the unexpected hit Troll, a Norwegian monster movie similar to Godzilla. While Netflix offers many international films, Troll quickly became its most popular. The film combines traditional Norwegian folklore with the excitement of a big-budget blockbuster, featuring a giant troll wreaking havoc in Norway. Now, three years later, Netflix has released the long-awaited sequel, marking the beginning of a new film series.
Netflix’s Troll 2 Premieres After the First Film Sets Records
I was really excited about Troll when it came out, and it seemed like critics mostly felt the same! It scored an 89% on Rotten Tomatoes, which is awesome. Okay, everyone admitted it wasn’t breaking new ground – it’s definitely a giant monster movie, or ‘kaiju’ film, if you want to get technical. But what it did do really well was draw on all that cool, old Norwegian folklore, making it feel fresh and different. One reviewer even said it was just as enjoyable as any of those big MonsterVerse films, and that’s saying something considering how popular those are!
Okay, so critics weren’t exactly raving about Troll, but honestly, that didn’t matter at all. The audience numbers were insane! As of today, it’s still the most-watched international movie Netflix has ever had – over 103 million views, which is wild. It didn’t quite break into the top 10 English-language films on Netflix, but it absolutely crushed the international record. When Troll came out, the previous record holder was The Platform with 89 million views – Troll blew past that! Since then, a few other international movies like Society of the Snow and Under Paris have done really well, but Troll still reigns supreme as the most-watched international film on the platform.
Three years after its initial release, Troll 2 is now available to stream. As of today, it has received eight reviews, six of which are positive. Inverse calls it a fun and original monster movie, while ComicBook’s Charlie Ridgley gave it a 3 out of 5, highlighting the good action and monster designs, but pointing out some issues with the writing and a noticeable streaming-focused aesthetic.
It remains to be seen how viewers will react to this new movie on Netflix, but its release timing is good. It came out between new seasons of Stranger Things and before the start of the holiday movie rush, which could help it gain an audience. If it does well, we might even see another sequel in the future.
