Exciting News: The Call the Midwife Movie is Coming – What to Expect!

It’s official: a Call the Midwife movie is in the works.

The announcement was made back in May, revealing several exciting pieces of news: one, that production for season 15 has begun; two, that there would be another two-part Christmas special as part of the upcoming season; and three, that a new series spin-off has been given the go-ahead.

In 2026, a prequel will be produced, taking place during World War II. This project will be developed, scripted, and filmed by the same creative team responsible for “Call the Midwife,” with Heidi Thomas serving as its leader.

Speaking about the new changes at Nonnatus House, she expressed a deeply moving sentiment that also seemed perfectly fitting. As I’ve always had an endless supply of tales for our midwives, that will never deplete.

Eva Yates, head of BBC Film, commented: “Call the Midwife has consistently delved into the challenges and lives of women throughout history, and we’re thrilled to be collaborating with [executive producer] Pippa [Harris] and Heidi in extending the Call the Midwife world to present these captivating characters on the big screen.

Further information regarding our forthcoming projects is set to surface towards the end of this year; however, let’s delve deeper into what we currently understand about the upcoming Call the Midwife film.

Call the Midwife movie release date speculation: When could it air?

It appears that the team behind “Call the Midwife” has yet to reveal either the start date of filming or the scheduled release date, making it challenging to accurately predict when the movie might be out.

After our Christmas special this year, season 15 is likely to premiere in early 2026. As mentioned before, production on the spin-off series will begin next year. Therefore, it might be a while until we see the film – possibly in 2027 or even 2028. However, these are just predictions.

Reports suggest that the television series Call the Midwife may conclude after its fifteenth season, paving the way for a spin-off and a movie. However, the BBC has denied these claims, stating that season 16 is on its way as the show remains an essential part of their programming in the future.

The BBC intends to keep the series “Call the Midwife” central to their programming for many more years, as they wish to comfort its audience about its future.

Previously mentioned, you can expect not one but two holiday specials, a fresh series, a movie, and a prequel series as well. After these, a 16th series is forthcoming. Rest assured, “Call the Midwife” will continue its journey.

It’s not unexpected, considering Season 14 drew an average of 7.8 million viewers, placing it among the top UK dramas on both traditional television and streaming platforms.

Call the Midwife movie plot: What’s it about?

Details are currently scarce.

All we know so far is that it will be “set overseas in 1972“.

Thomas mentioned that as the beloved characters in the Call the Midwife series advance deeper into the 1970s, it appears to be an ideal moment for them to step away from their familiar surroundings of Poplar and challenge themselves by exploring new, unknown territories.

With an increase in hospital deliveries and shifts within the NHS, they now have an opportunity to spread their wings and determine their true priorities.

Although the movie’s shooting spot is kept under wraps, let me tell you, it’s shaping up to be a visual treat when it hits the big screens!

Watch this space for updates.
