Originally scheduled to debut towards the end of summer, the upcoming animated series “Eyes of Wakanda“, spinoff from “Black Panther”, will now be available on Disney+ within a few short days.
The animated Marvel Cinematic Universe series, developed over several years, shines a light on various heroic figures from ancient Wakanda, apart from the widely recognized Black Panther character seen in the Marvel movies and comics.

The Best Superhero Movies Not From Marvel or DC
1. The Crow
As a movie critic, I’d say:
“Harkening back to the gritty comic book series, the iconic cult film ‘The Crow’ from 1994 tells my personal tale of a musician reborn after his and his fiancée’s brutal slaying the eve of their wedding. Driven by an unquenchable sorrow for his lost love, he embarks on a supernatural quest for vengeance against those who took her life. This dark, stylish film is more than just a revenge fantasy; it’s a mesmerizing spectacle filled with action sequences that still feel ahead of their time, yet remain deeply rooted in the goth-rock aesthetic and industrial ’90s soundtrack of its era. Unfortunately, this groundbreaking production is forever tainted by the untimely death of its charismatic lead actor, Brandon Lee.
2. The Incredibles
In a futuristic take on the ’60s, the film The Incredibles chronicles the story of a superhero family forced to live in suburbia by the government. However, when an arch-nemesis with a personal grudge against Mr. Incredible plots to eliminate all superhumans once and for all, the family must come together as one to thwart him.
First released in 2004, this animated masterpiece from Pixar is still widely praised by critics. Filled with exciting action sequences and memorable characters, the movie offers a thought-provoking narrative that tackles themes like conformity, family dynamics, and midlife crises.
3. Chronicle
Released in 2012, the movie “Chronicle” tells a story about three Seattle high school students who discover telekinetic and flying abilities after finding a strange object in the forest. At first, they use their powers to play harmless jokes and boost their popularity, but things take a dark turn when one of the troubled boys starts using his powers violently. This innovative sci-fi thriller skillfully combines classic superhero origins, found footage, and teenage struggles, keeping viewers hooked on the boys’ emotional conflicts and ethical dilemmas. The story reaches its climax with a heartbreaking, high-altitude battle.
4. Sky High
Disney’s movie “Sky High” combines the everyday struggles of school life with the thrilling action of a comic book film designed for families. Featuring Kurt Russell as a beloved character called the Commander, the story centers around his teenage son who attends a hidden school for superheroes despite not having any powers himself. This underrated 2005 movie has become a cult classic among fans, and while its mid-2000s appeal is nostalgic, it’s easy to see that the film was visionary in its clever, humorous exploration of superhero themes.
5. Unbreakable
The 2000 film “Unbreakable,” directed by M. Night Shyamalan, is actually a superhero movie that masquerades as a psychological thriller. Coming off the success of his 1999 hit, “The Sixth Sense,” this movie features Bruce Willis as an ordinary janitor who discovers extraordinary powers after an accident. The film’s realistic tone was somewhat undermined by a marketing strategy that failed to acknowledge its comic book roots. Despite this, it was a box office success and is now widely recognized as one of the greatest superhero films ever made.
6. Kick Ass
High school student Dave transforms into the armored superhero “Kick-Ass,” but his first mission ends disastrously. Later, a surgery leaves him with a partially metallic skeleton and some invincibility. However, things get complicated when his vigilante actions catch the eye of a merciless crime lord, as well as a retired cop who’s now a superhero and his foul-mouthed daughter, Hit-Girl.
Matthew Vaughn’s 2010 action-packed comedy about teenage superheroes is a darkly humorous blend of fast-paced sequences and brutal violence. (And just to clarify, while the Kick-Ass comic books were originally published under Marvel’s creator-owned imprint, the movie was not produced by Marvel, so it doesn’t belong to the Marvel Universe.)
7. The Rocketeer
In the spirit of the independent comic that inspired it, Disney’s “The Rocketeer” follows the story of a daring 1930s stunt pilot who transforms into a superhero using a unique rocket pack. Pursued by ruthless gangsters, FBI agents, and even Nazis, our hero eventually unravels a dark conspiracy involving advanced technology.
This film is a lively homage to the thrilling serials of the 1930s, offering breathtaking aerial scenes, Art Deco style, and the glamour of classic Hollywood. Despite underperforming at the box office in 1991, it garnered praise from critics and has since gained a dedicated fanbase over the years.
8. Brightburn
As a fan, I can’t help but ponder the intriguing question: “What if Superman had turned out evil?” The chilling film, Brightburn from 2019, delves into this very scenario. It revolves around an alien child who crash-lands on Earth and finds a home with a farm-dwelling couple. As he uncovers his extraordinary powers, his behavior gradually shifts, hinting at a sinister path unfolding.
Brightburn, under the guidance of future Superman director James Gunn, truly shines in its climactic scenes of raw brutality and chaos. It’s a captivating horror concept that manages to keep you on the edge of your seat with its suspense and violent twists, making it worth revisiting.
9. Megamind
In this overlooked gem from DreamWorks Animation, Will Ferrell lends his voice to the hilarious yet dimwitted blue supervillain Megamind. After finally vanquishing his long-time adversary, Ferrell’s Megamind finds himself aimless and yearns to invent a new hero to challenge.
While some criticize its plot as being somewhat uninspired, Megamind is wittier and funnier than it’s often given credit for. It boasts a goofy mad scientist vibe and serves up an ideal dose of family-friendly humor (the “spee-ider” joke still cracks me up!).
10. Darkman
In a unique twist, Sam Raimi’s 1990 horror-superhero film, “Darkman,” stands out not only due to its screenplay but also its originality. Liam Neeson portrays a scientist who is disfigured and left for dead by criminals, only to miraculously survive. Using his own experimental mask-making technology (alongside a fractured mind), he seeks vengeance. This film brilliantly combines gruesome action with dark humor, making it seem as if a violent comic book scene has been brought to life after being drenched in blood.
