It’s unclear what the future holds for Doctor Who, and even people working on the show are unsure. While that’s a little worrying, the series has always bounced back. Now that Ncuti Gatwa’s run as the Doctor has finished, more information is emerging about how his story ended. A popular companion from Doctor Who has now confirmed a major fan theory about a missing scene and the original plans for the finale.
The final episode of the show almost had a different conclusion, and though some details and images were shared, fans were still curious about it. Now, Carole Ann Ford, who played the Doctor’s granddaughter Susan, has revealed what that original ending was and explained why it was filmed. Her account strongly suggests that Ncuti Gatwa was once planning to continue as the Doctor for a third season. Ford shared this information during an interview with Katy Manning at Club Parramatta (as reported by Cultbox), while discussing her Doctor Who character and a scene she filmed with Sienna-Robyn Mavanga-Phipps, who plays Belinda and the Doctor’s daughter Poppy.
Ford described an episode meant to set up his return, where he held hands with a small, adorable three-year-old Black child. They were looking through a window, in a location the audience wasn’t meant to identify, and watching Ncuti Gatwa, playing his newly revealed grandfather, enjoy a lively party happening in a nearby shop.
Ford explained that her character, Susan, desperately wanted to visit her grandfather, hug him, and ask how he’d managed to survive being lost in space and what had caused him to change.
The party scene with Ncuti Gatwa quickly led fans to suspect that some footage had been cut from the final episode. When asked about the reshoots and changes, showrunner Russell T Davies simply stated that there were reasons, which he isn’t sharing.
This suggests a different direction for the show than what actually aired. With Ncuti Gatwa no longer playing the Doctor and the future of the series uncertain, it could be a long time before we understand how things will unfold. The removed scene might be related to the decision to move away from a third season with Gatwa, but for now, we can only speculate about why the plans changed.
