Dan Aykroyd hinted at a new movie and an animated series on Netflix. However, someone jumped the gun and used AI animation to create their own “live-action” version of the classic cartoon.
The debate over using AI continues, and though YouTube has reduced earnings for AI-generated content, some creators are still using it to make fan videos. AI Fanatics is one such creator, and their latest video is a tribute to Ghostbusters, featuring classic ghosts that will appeal to fans of The Real Ghostbusters cartoon.
This video features Peter, Egon, Ray, Winston, Janine, Lewis Tully, and Slimer, along with a wide variety of ghosts from the classic cartoon series. It includes well-known and more obscure specters—some you’ll remember but might not be able to name—culminating in the unforgettable Stay Puft Marshmallow Man. This nostalgic, two-and-a-half-minute video is sure to inspire Ghostbusters fans to revisit episodes of The Real Ghostbusters. You can watch the full video below.
The ‘Ghostbusters’ Franchise Has Been Reborn
The original Ghostbusters movie was a huge success in 1984, sparking a popular animated series called The Real Ghostbusters, a follow-up movie, and other animated shows featuring different teams of Ghostbusters. Although Dan Aykroyd briefly returned as Ray Stantz in the 1994 film Casper, fans began to think a reunion of the original Ghostbusters would never happen.
Honestly, after the 2016 Ghostbusters didn’t quite hit the mark, I really didn’t think we’d ever see another movie. So, imagine my surprise when Ghostbusters: Afterlife came out in 2021! It was packed with nods to the original 1984 film – things like the Terror Dogs and Gozer coming back – and it was exactly what a lot of us fans wanted. We were so happy to have the Ghostbusters back on the big screen!
Released in 2024, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire picks up where Afterlife left off. The original Ghostbusters team joins forces with new members – Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, and Mckenna Grace – to face a chilling new threat called the Death Chill. The movie feels like an extended episode of The Real Ghostbusters cartoon, introducing a fresh villain and focusing less on the history of the franchise.
Even though the recent Ghostbusters movies weren’t huge hits, the franchise is far from over. Netflix is creating a new animated series, and there’s a possibility the original actors will return to voice their characters after over 40 years. Plus, Dan Aykroyd has hinted at another movie being planned. Jason Reitman, following in his father Ivan’s footsteps, has been key to the Ghostbusters revival. He directed Afterlife, executive produced Frozen Empire, and is heavily involved with Ghost Corps, the company now responsible for all things Ghostbusters.
We don’t know what the next Ghostbusters movie will be like, but it definitely won’t be created using AI like in the video shown. Whether that’s a positive or negative thing depends on how you feel about artificial intelligence, but it’s almost certain the next film will be made by real people, not an AI like Grok.
