It looks like an Elden Ring movie is officially in the works! Photos from the set, showing what seems to be the Church of Marika – a very important place in the game – have surfaced online. With Alex Garland, known for directing Ex Machina and 28 Days Later, writing and directing, fans are already imagining who could star in the film. The detailed recreation of the church suggests the filmmakers are aiming for a truly ambitious and faithful adaptation.
Given recent developments, I think now is a good time to share these ideas. What follows is a mix of brainstorming and a serious proposal for a movie adaptation. As someone who knows this story well, I’ve carefully considered which actors could best bring the characters to life. I’ll cover the most important roles and suggest performers with the talent and charisma to play them. It’s a difficult task, though – the world of the game is so expansive that it wouldn’t be possible to fit everything into one film.
Creating the Cast List
Developing a list of characters meant first figuring out the movie’s core story. This was particularly challenging for Elden Ring because the game is so expansive. The movie could follow the events of the main game, take place after one of the endings, or even tell an origin story focusing on Marika’s journey to becoming a god.
I’ve been thinking about how to adapt some of the lore into a movie, and honestly, even smaller stories could work really well. Like, Vyke’s descent into madness is super compelling – a Tarnished so close to becoming Elden Lord, then losing it all to the Frenzy. But I ended up focusing on a mix of characters that seem most likely to appear, the ones fans already love, and some casting choices I think would be perfect. No single film could really do justice to all these characters, but I see this as a complete roadmap for a potential adaptation, regardless.
The Grounded Group
These characters live in the realistic, everyday world – they aren’t grand heroes, but they’re vital for making a story feel relatable and alive.
Melina — Cailee Spaeny (Civil War)
Melina is a challenging character to cast because she plays such a vital role in the story. She’s a guide whose intentions aren’t always clear, she helps the audience understand the world, and she reveals important details about the game’s lore – all while remaining enigmatic and connected to the central god of the Lands Between. While her appearance isn’t the most important thing, casting Cailee Spaeny is a smart choice. She’s incredibly talented and has a strong working relationship with the director, Alex Garland, which compensates for any differences in how she looks compared to the original character. There are also rumors suggesting Spaeny is actually involved in the project, making her a strong contender for the part.
Fia — Imogen Poots (The Father)
Fia, from Roundtable Hold, presents the most compelling philosophical storyline for a potential film adaptation, exploring themes of death, rebirth, and the conflict between the established order and the natural world. The role requires an actor who can make these complex ideas feel personal and relatable. Imogen Poots proved her ability to do just that in The Father, and her subtle, graceful performance style – a quiet strength even when dealing with difficult emotions – would perfectly capture Fia’s character, regardless of how players interact with her in the game.
Blaidd — Dev Patel (The Green Knight)
Blaidd is a remarkably compelling character – truly one of the best in the game. He’s also deeply sympathetic, a noble knight brought down by his own unwavering loyalty, and that mix of charisma and sadness is rare and captivating. However, Dev Patel excels at portraying similar characters; he could realistically play many on this list. His role in The Green Knight demonstrated his ability to be physically strong, emotionally reserved, and powerfully moving when needed.
The Larger Than Life Castings
These characters have a huge impact on the story’s background and overall mythology, but they’d probably serve as impressive details and visual highlights rather than being central to the main plot.
Malenia, Blade of Miquella — Elizabeth Debicki (The Crown)
Malenia is a strikingly memorable character in gaming, and whoever plays her needs to capture that visual impact. Elizabeth Debicki, at 6’3″, certainly has the stature to do so, but she’s also a versatile actress. Her performance as Princess Diana in The Crown showed she can portray both strength and compassion – qualities that would bring real depth to the character of Malenia, moving beyond just being a difficult boss to fight.
Starscourge Radahn — Richard Armitage (Hannibal)
Radahn is a challenging character to bring to life. He’s incredibly large, deeply tragic, and his defeat highlights just how devastating the Shattering was. However, actually making him work in a production seems almost impossible. Richard Armitage is a strong contender for the role, with experience in both classic theater and big-budget films. But it’s his performance as Francis Dolarhyde in Hannibal that really makes him a fit. He embodies a powerful physical presence and a chilling menace, and he’s able to switch between terrifying violence and quiet sorrow – perfectly capturing the contrast of Radahn’s character as a once-powerful warrior now slowly fading away.
Godfrey / Hoarah Loux — Travis Fimmel or Joel Edgerton
The actor playing the First Elden Lord needs to embody a legendary, almost primal warrior. Two strong candidates are Travis Fimmel, who famously played Ragnar Lothbrok in Vikings and has experience in large-scale productions like Warcraft, and Joel Edgerton, who can bring a powerful, nuanced performance, as seen in The King. Both actors would be excellent choices and could bring something unique to the role.
Mohg, Lord of Blood — Bill Nighy (Pirates of the Caribbean)
It’s likely others have had this idea before, which suggests it might be right. Mohg is a deeply sad character, but also fixated, disturbing, and frightening not because of how he looks, but because of his voice and how he carries himself. Bill Nighy’s performance as Davy Jones, with its incredible voice work and motion capture, feels perfectly suited to the kind of performance Mohg would require.
The Foundational and Film-Defining
Ultimately, the success of the movie hinges on the actors and the characters they play. These characters are central to the world of Elden Ring, and their portrayal on screen will be crucial to creating a compelling cinematic experience.
Miquella — Liv Hewson (Yellowjackets)
Miquella is a particularly unusual character to portray because so much of who they are is suggested rather than directly shown. They influence the story from the shadows, acting more as a powerful force than a traditional character. The actor needs to embody that mysterious, delicate quality, and Liv Hewson perfectly captures the character’s youth and otherworldly nature. Plus, their work on Yellowjackets proves they can deliver a compelling and dramatic performance.
Morgott / Margit — Jeremy Irons (Kingdom of Heaven)
This role is fantastic because it’s complex – a villain motivated by past rejection and a wavering devotion to a group that never truly welcomed him. Consider Paddy Considine’s performance as Viserys in House of the Dragon: a proud, heartbroken man whose downfall is truly tragic. Jeremy Irons is a remarkably talented actor, and he’d bring the necessary voice and weight to this character while maintaining a believable, grounded performance – avoiding over-the-top theatrics.
Ranni the Witch — Suki Waterhouse (The Bad Batch)
Ranni is a challenging character to portray because she’s both queenly and ethereal, like a porcelain doll hiding a fierce determination. While there are many approaches an actress could take, I think Suki Waterhouse’s performance in the 2016 film The Bad Batch is a great example of what’s needed. That role really pushed her emotionally, and it makes me believe she could capture the restrained power and intensity that Ranni demands.
The Tarnished — Kit Connor (Warfare, Romeo + Juliet)
Finding an actor to play the main character in Elden Ring will be a major challenge, but discussions are reportedly already underway between director Sam Garland and Kit Connor. While it’s unclear what role they’re discussing, Connor seems like a natural fit. He has the youthful, heroic quality needed for the character, and he’s already worked well with Garland, which is important for such a central role.
Queen Marika / Radagon — Emma D’Arcy (House of the Dragon)
Marika and Radagon represent the ultimate dual role – two distinct characters who are also fundamentally the same. This duality explores key themes in Elden Ring about the nature of gods, inner conflict, and the sacrifices made to maintain control. The actor playing them needs to convincingly portray both sides without one overshadowing the other. Emma D’Arcy is a remarkably talented performer with experience playing royalty under stress, making them a natural fit for the role. While it would be ideal if they were a little older to better match the characters’ complex backstories, this is a small concern given how perfectly they otherwise embody the part.
An Incomplete Picture
While this list isn’t exhaustive – a complete cast for an Elden Ring adaptation would be enormous – it covers a lot of important characters. It’s unrealistic to expect a single movie to include them all, so the goal is to nail the spirit of a few key roles without overlooking too many others. Leaving out a character like the Dung Eater was a risk, but I think it was the right call.
