Netflix’s popular show *Monster: The Ed Gein Story* is now up against a new competitor. The third part of the true crime series by Ian Brennan and Ryan Murphy, which tells the story of the notorious murderer and grave robber Ed Gein, launched on October 3rd and quickly became a hit, topping streaming charts and sparking conversations online. If you’ve finished watching this controversial new season and are craving more true crime, another well-received serial killer drama is now available on a different streaming service.
Peacock recently released *Devil in Disguise: John Wayne Gacy*, a new true crime series exploring the life and crimes of the notorious serial killer who murdered at least 33 young men and boys in the 1970s. The eight-part show delves into Gacy’s life while also focusing on his victims and the lasting impact of his crimes. All episodes are currently available to stream.
How Does Devil in Disguise: John Wayne Gacy Compare to Monster: The Ed Gein Story?
Critics seem to like the third season of Ryan Murphy’s true crime series much more than viewers do. While it’s been a streaming hit, racking up over 20 million views in the last week, it’s received mostly negative reviews. On Rotten Tomatoes, the critic score is only 17%, a significant decrease from 45% in Season 2 and 57% in Season 1. Many critics have called *The Ed Gein Story* overly graphic, exploitative, and inaccurate, with a confusing plot and a weak attempt to understand the criminal’s motives.
Unlike some true crime series, *Devil in Disguise* handles the story of a serial killer with sensitivity and restraint. While it explores Gacy’s past, it never tries to excuse his actions, portraying him as the monster he was. The show avoids excessive violence – with only two longer, graphic scenes – and instead focuses equally on the victims and the devastating impact his crimes had on their families and the community. Each episode is named after one of his victims, and their lives are explored before they met Gacy. Critics have given the series overwhelmingly positive reviews, with a 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes based on eight reviews.
