The long-awaited release of Fantastic Four: First Steps has hit store shelves, marking the start of a fresh chapter for Marvel’s original superhero family. With key characters like Reed Richards and Sue Storm now joining the roster, fans are eager to imagine future collaborations with other beloved MCU heroes. This anticipation grew even stronger when director Matt Shakman discussed Reed’s character development throughout the film, particularly his mention of “the guy who’s leading the Avengers.” However, Shakman has since clarified that he was not referring to any confirmed status regarding the Avengers: Doomsday project.
In an interview with Variety, Shakman expressed that Pedro Pascal was ideally suited for portraying Reed and his transformation throughout the movie. He explained, “Pascal transitions from a shy scientist confined in the lab, to a devoted husband and protective father, and eventually, the leader of the Avengers. It became clear to me that our character needed to embody all these aspects.
In a recent chat with Bustle (as reported by Inverse), Shakman made it clear what he truly meant. “I didn’t really say that,” Shakman explained. “What I saw on the internet was people saying I said that.” To set the record straight, he clarified: “What I actually stated and let me make this clear, is that the character in question is incredibly complex in the comics. He transitions from an exceptional scientist to a hero who saves the day, and back to being a family member. The actor I’m casting needs to be able to portray all three aspects effectively. Unfortunately, much of what was said was taken out of context.
Shakman expressed immense satisfaction with Pascal’s portrayal of Reed Richards, praising him for effectively capturing all aspects of the character. He noted that Pascal skillfully represented Reed’s intelligence, his distinct scientific persona, his parental concerns, his loving relationships, and the emotional depth crucial to the film.
Regarding Reed’s involvement in the MCU and the Avengers: Doomsday movie, director Shakman stated that it’s ultimately up to the film itself to decide where Reed will end up. In other words, we’ll have to wait for Avengers: Doomsday to find out what happens to Reed.
As a dedicated moviegoer eagerly anticipating the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s (MCU) future, it’s intriguing to ponder what Reed and his family might contribute next. Given the impending Doctor Doom narrative unfolding across the MCU, it seems only natural that the brilliant minds of Reed, Sue, the flamboyant Johnny Storm, and the ever-lovable Ben Grimm will play a significant part in these upcoming events. However, we’ll have to wait for Avengers: Doomsday to uncover those secrets. In the meantime, fans can enjoy the Fantastic Four in action right now as they tread their first steps on the big screen in the movie First Steps, currently playing in theaters.
