Contrary to widespread speculation, Vanessa Kirby clarifies that her potential involvement in superhero roles has been overstated. However, she was pleasantly surprised to be linked with such characters. Currently promoting her Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in “The Fantastic Four: First Steps“, hitting theaters on July 25th, Kirby has been associated with various superhero roles in Marvel, DC, and other comic book adaptations in recent years. Despite dismissing most of these reports during a podcast interview on Happy Sad Confused, she didn’t entirely rule them out. She expressed that playing Catwoman in “The Batman” would have been a dream role, but she had nothing but praise for Zoë Kravitz, who actually landed the part.
Based on chatter among journalists and enthusiasts over the past few years, it appears that Kirby has been a strong contender for several major superhero roles during the 2020s, and to some extent, this might be accurate. However, when asked if she had pursued numerous comic book movie roles prior to First Steps, she responded, “No, not literally. I never auditioned for them.” Kirby didn’t provide further details about how close she came to these roles or whether any discussions with directors or studios took place, but she did express a keen interest in Catwoman specifically.
She exclaimed, ‘Catwoman – wow, what a fantastic dream!’ about Zoë, who she found simply amazing. There wasn’t anyone more fitting for the role. When asked if she was on a list of potential stars, she agreed, ‘Yes,’ and then emphasized, “I truly believe it was always going to be her. She’s an exceptional actress – stunningly beautiful.
Regarding another well-known DC Comics collaboration she was linked with in gossip, Kirby remarked, “Birds of Prey – no, I never interacted on that, but I was thrilled to learn that it’s a female superhero, anti-heroine film being produced.” The actress emphasized the significance of portraying diverse characters within the genre, and expressed her interest in roles that reflect a broader range of people, all while preserving the core essence of comics and superheroes.
She expressed her long-standing admiration because these [things/people] are adored worldwide, reminiscent of epic tales like The Odyssey or The Iliad. When she encountered one that featured a woman, who was pregnant, newly mothered, and possessing extraordinary abilities, her emotional response was heartfelt and sincere.
Kirby mentioned that the “family-like” dynamic of the Fantastic Four was essential for her to embody Sue Storm effectively. She explained, “It gave me a sense of relatability.” She continued, “Trying to comprehend what it would feel like to have these dual experiences occurring simultaneously was a challenge, but I appreciated that aspect because it connected it to a domestic setting in some way. This family environment, their household, made it more accessible, I believe.
On this coming Friday, July 25th, you can catch “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” in theaters. Meanwhile, “The Batman” and “Birds of Prey” are currently available for streaming on HBO Max.
