Alinea Analytics is back with fresh industry insights, using their unique research approach.
Some sources say this data is relatively reliable, others point to errors within its results that demand more scrutiny.
Okay, so just to be clear, these numbers are more like educated guesses than anything official, but I think they’re worth looking at anyway.
But the latest report from analyst Rhys Elliott is particularly pertinent, as it focuses on first-party PS5 games from the past year.
There are some big hits here, as well as some misses, so let’s break it down:
- Ghost of Yotei: 4.8 million
- Death Stranding 2: On the Beach: 1.7 million
- MLB The Show 26: 745k
- Saros: 406k
- Marathon: 347k
- God of War: Sons of Sparta: 132k
It’s important to remember that these numbers are just for the PlayStation 5. Sales for Death Stranding 2 and Marathon on PC aren’t included, and MLB The Show 26 was released on multiple platforms.
Elliott’s analysis shows that Ghost of Yotei is doing exceptionally well, with sales boosted by well-timed discounts.
Early signs suggest MLB The Show 26 isn’t generating quite as much excitement as last year’s version, but this could be due to fans needing a break or a dip in overall baseball enthusiasm.
Saros is the big worry: Elliott says it should continue selling with discounts et al, but that it’s unlikely to break even at this point. That’s a real concern in this environment, assuming the estimates are accurate.
Marathon doesn’t seem to be gaining traction on consoles, but PC sales are expected to make up for it. It’s surprising that Sony hasn’t been able to attract players of this game to the PS5, considering they own the development studio.
Again, these are only estimates, but it shows me that people are hungry for PlayStation’s big cinematic single player games first and foremost. Looking at this, is it really a surprise the company is doubling down on titles like Marvel’s Wolverine?
Despite being developed by a small independent team, God of War: Sons of Sparta is likely to be financially successful. Analysts estimate around $4 million in revenue, which, while adding another game to the PS5 library, won’t significantly impact Sony’s overall earnings.
