Koei Tecmo and Team NINJA announced that a demo for FATAL FRAME II: Crimson Butterfly REMAKE will be available on March 5th. They’re also partnering with Silent Hill f to offer free, downloadable costumes for both games.
Here are the latest details:
In FATAL FRAME II: Crimson Butterfly REMAKE, players take on the roles of twin sisters who become lost in a haunted, deserted village. Armed only with the Camera Obscura—a special camera that can capture and contain ghosts—they must fight to survive. This updated version of the classic FATAL FRAME game includes a brand-new ending with a song called “Utsushie” by Tsuki Amano, plus extra stories and areas to discover.
As players journey through the haunted world, they can use Broken Spirit Stones to uncover the backstories of different characters and reveal new side stories, adding depth to the Crimson Butterfly universe. They’ll also explore intriguing new locations, including the eerie Umbral Mound – a roped-off burial ground hidden in a bamboo forest – and the atmospheric Eikado Temple, lit by candles and featuring a pair of twin statues bound together with sacred cords.
As the adventurers investigate the haunted village, they face increasing danger. The evil spirits become more frantic, even growing wings to attack. When enraged, these spirits are consumed by a red, hateful energy, allowing them to heal quickly and strike with greater speed and power.
Players can strengthen their Camera Obscura in combat with Prayer Beads, which add more focus points and make it reload faster, helping them fight shadowy spirits. Exploration will also reveal Reversion Beads, allowing players to reset all of their unlocked upgrades.

Players can use the Camera Obscura to capture new Special Shots and battle vengeful spirits. Different filters change how these Special Shots work, letting players customize their tactics. For instance, the Paraceptual Filter unlocks the “Blinding” shot, which temporarily blinds enemies for a quick escape. The Radiant Filter, on the other hand, enables the “Purging” shot, dealing extra damage at the cost of Mio’s willpower.
The Camera Obscura isn’t just a tool for uncovering secrets; you can also use it to photograph special Twin Dolls hidden around Minakami Village. These dolls, based on the legendary Twin Maidens, protect the village from disaster. When you photograph a pair of dolls together, you purify them, releasing the emotions they hold and bringing them peace. Purifying these Twin Dolls also unlocks new rewards you can trade for at the Point Exchange.
So, besides all the cool new stuff they’ve added to FATAL FRAME II: Crimson Butterfly REMAKE, there’s this awesome Photo Mode! I’m really excited about it – I can take pictures during gameplay and decorate them with frames, stickers, and effects. It’s a great way to make some seriously spooky mementos, and who knows, maybe I’ll even snap a pic of a ghost I wasn’t expecting!
Get ready for even more frights! We’re teaming up with the popular psychological horror series, SILENT HILL – which has sold over 13 million copies globally – to bring new, terrifying content to the game. Players will soon be able to download costumes inspired by SILENT HILL for free. Stay tuned for more information about this update in the weeks ahead.
The remake of FATAL FRAME II: Crimson Butterfly will be released on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Switch 2, and PC (via Steam) on March 12th.
You can now play Silent Hill f on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC. It’s available through Steam, the Epic Games Store, and the Microsoft Store.
