While the Jedi are central to most Star Wars stories, Fate of the Old Republic has the potential to deliver the Sith’s perspective we’ve always wanted. The Skywalker saga consistently emphasizes the triumph of good over evil, naturally shifting the focus to the Jedi. George Lucas, in particular, didn’t seem very interested in exploring the Sith’s motivations – even memorable villains like Darth Maul had limited screen time, appearing for just over six minutes in The Phantom Menace.
While Darth Maul did come back – even George Lucas seemed to regret killing him off, bringing him back in Star Wars: The Clone Wars – the story still primarily followed the Jedi and clone troopers, making them the central heroes. The villains, and the dark side in general, remained somewhat mysterious, partly because of the Sith’s tradition of having only two members at any given time. With so many more Jedi than Sith, it’s natural that the heroes received more attention and development.
Fate of the Old Republic can Finally Change Star Wars’ Biggest Problem
The Old Republic era – famously explored in games like Knights of the Old Republic – has always stood out in Star Wars history. These stories take place thousands of years before the Skywalker saga, spanning from the very beginning of the Sith to the time of Darth Bane, who established the Sith’s ‘Rule of Two.’ It was a period when the Sith were sometimes more powerful and numerous than the Jedi, and there were actually multiple attempts to wipe out the Jedi throughout history. This era has always offered a huge amount of storytelling potential.
As a Star Wars fan, I’ve been really hoping for a deep dive into the dark side, and it feels like Lucasfilm has been teasing us for a while. Remember The Acolyte? It was supposed to be all about the Sith, and I was so hyped! It’s a shame it got cancelled because it sounds like they had a really cool story planned. Now we’re getting this new animated series, Maul: Shadow Lord, which looks awesome, seeing what Maul was up to after the events of the movies. But honestly, even that isn’t a true Sith story. Maul was off doing his own thing, separate from the actual Sith line, so we’re still waiting for that fully focused dark side series!
Will Fate of the Old Republic finally let us play as the Sith? As a follow-up to the original Knights of the Old Republic – created by some of the same developers – the title suggests this game won’t focus solely on the Jedi. Previous KotOR games explored the line between good and evil, letting players choose to be light-sided or dark-sided, and even become Sith. This new game could finally deliver a story centered around the Sith that fans have been wanting.
Fate of the Old Republic can Show why the Sith Fail

Okay, that title is definitely hinting at something big. If this game is about the ultimate fate of the Old Republic, we need to see why the Sith are doomed to lose. I’m hoping they really dig into how the Sith are always fighting amongst themselves for power – that’s what took down the original Sith Empire, right? That’s why they came up with the Rule of Two, trying to control all the backstabbing. Basically, the Sith always fail because they’re built on competition, not teamwork. It’s just in their nature to tear each other apart.
Fans are wondering if the current storyline might actually be the official history of Darth Bane. This character was previously explored in fantastic Star Wars comics and a great book series by Drew Karpyshyn, who also worked on Knights of the Old Republic. While there have been clues that the new version of the story is slightly different, it opens up exciting possibilities. Some lines of dialogue even suggest this Darth Bane was an Emperor who created the Rule of Two before the Jedi defeated him. If this is the case, it promises to be a really compelling story.
It’s going to be a while before we learn more. The game was just announced, and even though the developers want to release it as soon as possible, it will still take several years to finish. So, gamers will need to be patient! Details will be revealed eventually, but not quickly. For now, we can only guess if this will be the story we’ve been hoping for.
