Platinum Trophy #14: Concrete Genie

Date Earned: 8th October 2019

Dopamine Index:

Concrete Genie has an air of sadness about it, despite being a pretty joyous experience to play.

Though it was only the second game made by PixelOpus, it was a much more ambitious project and stood out from the other games Sony was releasing. Sadly, it turned out to be the team’s final creation.

It’s disappointing that Concrete Genie doesn’t quite live up to its promise, because it’s full of creative ideas and potential. While not flawless, PixelOpus clearly put a lot of heart into making something different, and they definitely succeeded in that regard.

You’re Ash, a young boy who discovers a magical paintbrush. When he paints on the walls of his dull town, his artwork comes to life, creating a vibrant 2D world where you can let your imagination run wild.

As you explore Denska and solve puzzles to advance the story, you’ll also discover that every wall is a place to express your creativity. You can draw charming creatures and design environments with plants and objects for them to enjoy.

Concrete Genie offers a genuinely charming adventure, though one unexpected moment near the end felt a bit out of place. The game introduces combat fairly late, but doesn’t really have enough time left to develop it into anything more than a simple mechanic.

It’s an odd choice, but I have to respect the attempt to keep things fresh.

The game’s trophies are as charming and lighthearted as the game itself. You’ll enjoy interacting with the genie characters and finding hidden collectibles along the way.

I found earning the trophies to be a very organic part of the game; I unlocked almost all of them simply by playing as usual.

I did get the platinum trophy, but I didn’t earn all of the trophies in the PSVR section of the game. Surprisingly, it doesn’t bother me at all that my completion isn’t 100%.

Cheers, Concrete Genie.
